The numbers on heater thermostats represent specific temperature ranges.

Anyone who knows them can adjust their heating behavior better and thus save energy.

The numbers on the heating thermostats are not arranged arbitrarily.

Quite the opposite: They even show fairly precisely how warm it is in the room.

You can also see exactly at this point how much energy could be saved.

Heating: That's what the numbers on the thermostat mean

The further the thermostat of the heating is turned up, the warmer it gets in the room.

That's clear to everyone.

But did you know that the different numbers on the dial are actually very clear temperature indications?

The dashes between the numbers roughly represent one degree each.

Tip: If you turn your heating down a little, you save around six percent of energy per degree.

But: In order to prevent mold, no room should fall below 16 degrees permanently.

Are the numbers on the thermostat a reliable source of temperature?

The values shown in the table apply to almost all heaters.

But: The room temperatures can still vary slightly.

This is the case, for example, when windows or doors let in drafts.

Radiators also do not perform at their best when the radiators are covered by curtains or furniture.

If window sills are installed directly above the heater, the thermostat may also reach the target temperature too early.

The heat accumulates under the window sill.

If you know what the individual numbers on the thermostat mean, you can save a lot of energy when heating.

Mistake: Level 5 heats up particularly quickly

After staying away for a long time, you come back to the cold apartment and would like to have it warm and cozy quickly.

However, turning the heating up to the highest level does nothing here.

This does not mean that the heater warms up faster, it just runs longer until the desired temperature of around 28 degrees is reached.

But: Turning the heating down completely when leaving the apartment is not always worthwhile - the insulation also plays a role here.

You could avoid the cold apartment with a programmable thermostat, for example.

These are available in many hardware stores from around 16 euros.

This allows you to regulate the heating of the apartment even when you are not at home.

Most thermostats are relatively easy to replace.

The best temperatures for different living spaces

The heating does not always have to be on in every room.

Experts advise that temperatures are set between 18 and 24 degrees.

Thanks to the asterisk setting, rooms that are rarely used never cool down more than five degrees.
