Retrospective relief for households that heat with fuel oil, pellets or liquid gas: That's what politicians have decided.

But what do you need to know about it in detail?

Berlin – Against the background of the energy crisis and the resulting high prices, gas customers in Germany are also to be relieved.

Among other things, a one-off payment in December 2022 and a price cap from spring 2023 are planned.

There should also be help for people who heat with oil or pellets: 1.8 billion euros are available for this, which politicians in the form of the federal government want to make available.

The Federal Council gave the green light for both price brakes on Friday, December 16, 2022.

But what does that actually mean for consumers and what should be considered in detail?

kreiszeitung.de provides the big overview.

State subsidy for heating oil and pellets: Politicians want to relieve consumers in Germany financially

For a long time, there had been a struggle for corresponding relief, i.e. with regard to heating with heating oil or pellets.

The prices for heating oil and pellets have risen enormously.

However, the price increases for products are not as dramatic as they are for gas.

Nevertheless, consumers in this country who rely on oil or pellet heating feel disadvantaged in view of the gas relief.

But now the federal government is reacting.

A key issues paper, which would be available to the

AFP

news agency, among others , shows that there should be aid of up to 2000 euros per household because of the high energy prices.

With the relief that has now been decided, “an imbalance in the previous aid will be healed,” said Saarland Prime Minister Anke Rehlinger (SPD) in this context.

After all, the price increase for oil and pellets is "very painful for many".

Consumers with oil or pellet heating receive state subsidies - which they have to apply for themselves

The federal states should pay out the money for consumers who rely on oil or pellet heating.

This money is de facto made available by the federal government.

In order for consumers to receive the aid, they must first apply for it.

A big difference to the relief for gas customers, which are paid out automatically.

It is not yet known how exactly the corresponding applications work and from when the subsidy for the heating costs will also be transferred.

Which consumers are entitled to the subsidy for heating costs

But what is already certain: the subsidy for heating costs should be available for all households that heat with so-called "non-performance-related fuels", according to the government's key issues paper.

Specifically, these are sources of energy that are not distributed over a fixed network, but are instead delivered to the end consumer by tanker truck, for example.

However, there are also exceptions to this rule.

Because in Germany, for example, all gaseous fuels are considered to be so-called "performance-related energy sources".

And this is despite the fact that some natural gas or hydrogen can also be transported in bottles or by truck.

Consumers must meet these conditions for the subsidy towards heating costs

All consumers in Germany who bought heating oil, liquid gas or pellets between 1 January and 1 December 2022 can apply for the financial relief mentioned.

Another condition that must be met: the price paid for it must have at least doubled.

In order to provide proof, a corresponding invoice must be submitted.

In addition, there should be a minimum limit.

This means: If the increase in heating costs compared to the previous year is less than 100 euros, there is no government subsidy.

Social association VdK welcomes help for consumers with oil or pellet heating - and demands quick payment

The help, with which households that rely on oil or pellet heating, are now retrospectively relieved, is welcomed by the social

association VdK

(Association of War Damaged, War Survivors and Social Pensioners in Germany).

But now it is also crucial that the help “reaches those affected in the shortest possible time,” said VdK President Verena Bentele of the AFP.

She specifically asked the countries to regulate the payment unbureaucratically.
