If radiators are constantly making knocking noises, it's annoying. Here is an overview of the possible reasons for this and what you can do about it.

Kassel – Knocking heaters can be quite annoying in the long run.

Many of those affected complain of increasing knocking or cracking at irregular intervals in the heating.

This can have different causes.

Depending on the nature of the problem, you can fix the knocking heater yourself or you may need to hire professionals.

According to

utopia.de

, the problem is usually air or excessive pressure in the line.

Fixing it too tightly on the heating pipes can also cause noise.

An occasional knock or gurgle in the line is normal.

However, if this happens frequently, you should investigate the problem.

Heater knocks: These could be the possible causes

A knocking heater can have various causes.

We have compiled the possible reasons and solutions for you below:

  • Air in the system:

If the heater knocks or gurgles, air may have gotten into the heating system.

One indication of this is that the radiator is no longer getting really warm.

To get the problem under control, you can bleed the radiator.

To do this, open the vent valve and let the air escape.

When you no longer hear hissing, you can close the vent valve again.

    Tip:

Hold a cup or container under the ventilation valve, as heating water can escape.

  • The pressure in the heater is too high:

If the heater knocks constantly, this may be due to the internal pressure being too high.

Optimum water pressure can only be achieved if the circulation pump and the overflow valve are matched to each other.

If the overflow valve is not available or set incorrectly, there will be too much pressure in the heater.

This causes the valve to vibrate when opening or closing.

    In this case,

    utopia.de

    advises to hire experts.

You can install an overflow valve or properly adjust the existing valve.

  • Stretching noises :

If the heater only knocks when turning it on and off, then it is very likely stretching noises.

Warm water expands more than cold water.

The expansion noises occur when the pipe clamps are attached too tightly to the heating pipes and this creates pressure.

You should hire professionals to loosen the pipe clamps.

  • Knocking due to reversed supply and return lines:

Reversed supply and return lines can also be the reason why the heater knocks.

You can check whether the noise is actually coming from there by switching off the heating and waiting until it is cold.

Then turn the heater back on and check which tube gets warm first.

If the return pipe heats up first, the runs are reversed.

The return is usually at the bottom and the flow at the top of the radiator.

  • If the heater runs are mixed up, the pipes do not have to be replaced immediately.

You can get a reverse flow thermostatic valve and either do the replacement yourself or have professionals do it.

The thermostatic valve is already available in every conventional hardware store for 15 euros.

Heating knocks: You can take these preventive measures

There are a few precautions you can take to prevent knocking in the heating system in the first place.

You can prevent the heater from knocking with these measures:

  • Have your heating system serviced regularly.

The water pressure can be regulated, which saves energy at the same time.

  • Old heating pumps run at the same speed.

A modern pump regulates the speed and prevents noise.

  • If your heater is too old, more problems can arise.

After 30 years, it is even required by law to have your heating replaced.
