Washing bras is not that easy: hand wash or machine?

What temperature?

And how often should you change your lingerie anyway?

Every woman knows the dilemma: you change your underpants every day, so they are washed accordingly.

But how long can I wear the bra?

After all, this part of the underwear does not get dirty as quickly and only comes into contact with sweat.

How often bras should end up in the laundry basket - and what needs to be considered when washing and drying.

Do bras belong in the washing machine?

Or do I prefer to wash them by hand?

There is often uncertainty about this question.

How often to wash the bra?

In fact, bras should be washed less often than many believe: according to experts, it is sufficient to wash bras after three to four uses, in contrast to other underwear.

Incidentally, this cycle also applies to pajamas, which become contaminated particularly quickly.

More frequent washes, on the other hand, would unnecessarily stress the material.

Likewise, bras should not be worn two days in a row, but should be aired out in between.

On days when you sweat a lot, however, the brassiere should be washed after just one day.

The same applies to sports bras.

Hand wash or washing machine?

Since bras are much more sensitive due to their shape, many people wonder whether they can be put in the washing machine at all.

In fact, hand washing bras is ideal because they are gentle on both shape and material.

Especially

  • preformed bras (e.g. push-ups)

  • lace bras

  • self-adhesive bras

  • and fine lingerie, eg made of silk

should be cleaned by hand.

To wash by hand, simply fill the sink or a large washbowl with lukewarm water, add some mild detergent (follow the manufacturer's dosage instructions) and let it soak.

Then rinse carefully with clear water.

Please never wring or squeeze!

How do I wash bras in the washing machine?

If you don't have the time or inclination to hand wash, you can also wash your lingerie in the washing machine.

However, be careful

  • to put the bras in a laundry net.

Hangers like to rub through the fabric, come loose and can then get caught in the washing drum or damage other textiles.

  • close the bra clasp.

Otherwise, the fine hooks could tear holes in other items of laundry.

  • Do not turn bowls inwards.

  • to select the gentle program or the wash cycle "hand wash".

    Ideally, avoid spinning.

  • not to stuff too much laundry into the machine and best to put only light laundry items in the drum.

Wash bras at what temperature?

A wash cycle with bras should not be too hot - as a rule, 30 degrees Celsius are sufficient to become hygienically clean again.

A washing temperature of 40 degrees Celsius is also fine.

But you shouldn't wash the bras hotter, to avoid material damage and shrinkage.

Which detergent is suitable for bras?

Underwear manufacturers recommend using mild detergents for bra care.

Don't use any fabric softener, as this would clog the fine elastane fibers and cause the underwear to stretch out.

Bra Drying: Do not tumble dry

After washing, bras are dried with the cups facing up.

To do this, place a towel underneath.

The fine material would shrink in the tumble dryer.

However, if you dry your clothes on a drying rack, you should avoid certain rooms so that no mold forms in the apartment.

Then it's better to dry the laundry on the balcony - this also works in winter.
