A patient in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, was waiting for the staff in an ambulance when a man suddenly got in and drove off in the vehicle.

Apparently he wanted to steal the car.

The vehicle was parked in front of a clinic on Tuesday, the police said in Würzburg on Wednesday.

While a patient was being handed over to the staff there, a 22-year-old who was to be driven home remained in the vehicle.

Apparently under the influence of drugs

According to the police, the man who was "apparently mentally ill" recognized the unlocked ambulance and drove away in it, but was located a short time later.

He was arrested near another clinic where he apparently wanted to drop off the 22-year-old patient.

The 31-year-old, who was apparently also under the influence of medication, was admitted to a hospital.

Among other things, he has to answer for deprivation of liberty and theft.

The woman was then reportedly taken home safely.
