Employees cannot just stay at home

Basically, according to lawyers, there is no legal entitlement to time off if the pet is sick.
In emergencies, you should speak to your employer immediately.
If you are ill yourself, you inform your employer and go to the doctor, who may write you off sick.
But what if the dog suddenly gets sick at home and nobody else at home can take care of it?
Therefore, employees cannot simply stay away from the office.

In principle, according to employment lawyers, there is no legal entitlement to time off if the pet is sick.
For animal welfare considerations, however, it may be possible in individual cases to be excused from work, according to lawyers.
If the dog is really very ill and there is no one who can take care of it, it could be "impossible" for the employee to go to work for animal welfare reasons, explained specialist lawyer for labor law Barbara Reinhard in a report published by the German Press Agency in 2019 (dpa) on the subject.
"The balancing of interests between animal concerns and the interests of the employer can mean that I can stay at home," said the lawyer, according to dpa.
Anyone who immediately deregisters with the employer in these exceptional cases and takes the dog to the vet does not risk a warning.

Dog sick - regulate home office and other possibilities at work
The best thing to do in an emergency – for example, if your dog urgently needs to be taken to the vet – is to call your boss quickly and discuss with your superiors how best to proceed.
For example, you could offer your employer to make up for lost hours.
Your company may also have the option of working from home afterwards, as long as your sick pet is dependent on your help at home.
