(ANSA) - ROME, DECEMBER 21 - Alberto Asor Rosa - who died today in Rome at the age of 89 - was a combative, working-class intellectual, always poised between study and social struggle.
"He was supposed to leave the clinic this Friday. He seemed to be better but he had a sudden cardiac arrest. In the last two years my father has had shaky health due to heart and lung problems" explains Angela Asor Rosa, one of the two daughters, with her sister Laura to ANSA .
He was born in Rome on September 23, 1933, to graduate from the LiceoClassico Augusto in Rome, he later graduated from Sapienza, supervisor Natalino Sapegno.

But above all renowned scholar, professor of history of literature at Sapienza University,
an intellectual of Marxist training who has always been involved in the dialectic between culture and power and in the analysis of social reality.
He left the PCI in 1956, like many other intellectuals who reacted horrified at the Hungarian tragedy, and only returned in 1972: he worked on its transformation and was a parliamentarian (elected in 1979), and then, after the fall of the Wall, a member of the management of the PDS and director of the new 'Rebirth'.
A scholar of modern Italian literature and of the Baroque period in particular, he conceived and directed the monumental History of Einaudi literature, and many monographs and very crowded university courses dedicated to the great protagonists of Italian literature.
Asor Rosa's debut as a scholar took place with ''Scrittori e popolo'' in 1965.
His subsequent study of ''Thomas Mann or 'bourgeois ambiguity'' of 1971 had the same ideological slant, albeit with a greater historicist commitment.
