Everything you need to know about winter diseases (Walla! NEWS system)
No one wants to be that person who blows their nose and then peeks into the tissue in wonder, we also really prefer not to be one of those people who gets caught poking their nose in traffic and then examines the loot.
And yet - if you get to know your runny nose a little better, you can know how to treat it, and maybe also avoid an unnecessary trip to the doctor.
A runny nose is always annoying, but not every runny nose is annoying in the same way, and every color, shape and texture has a different meaning.
Here's what you must know:
Clear
runny nose Clear runny nose is a normal, healthy discharge from the nasal cavity.
The reasons for a clear runny nose can be an allergy (at the change of seasons for example) and then the nose does not stop running, and the runny nose is accompanied by sneezing, tears in the eyes and nasal irritation.
Another type of clear runny nose is the one that comes in the first and mild stages of a cold or inflammation of the upper respiratory tract.
White snot
A white runny nose is also a "normal" runny nose in the early stages of flu, upper respiratory tract infections and various winter colds.
In these diseases, usually after a few days of clear runny nose, the runny nose becomes whiter and more viscous.
This is a natural process that should not bother you.
What color did you get?

Yellow-green
snot When the snot changes color to yellow or green, it indicates inflammation.
An inflamed runny nose does indicate a bacterial infection, but that doesn't mean you have to run to the doctor.
If the inflammatory rhinitis is also accompanied by a high fever, headache or strong cough, you should see a doctor.
Pink to red
runny nose A pink to red runny nose suggests blood, but it's really no reason to stress.
A pink-red runny nose indicates bleeding from the nasal cavity.
Congestion in the nose can also cause congestion in the blood vessels and then one of them can simply burst.
In addition, in the winter, because of the dryness and the cold, there is also dryness in the mucous membranes of the nose, and sometimes this can cause bleeding.
If you have a slight nosebleed or residual blood in the dessert, you can use moisturizing ointments for the nose and wash it with salt water.
If the bleeding repeats itself or if it flows out into the face (or back into the throat) you should see a doctor.
Sometimes the doctor will cauterize the ruptured blood vessel to repair it.

Brown snot A brown
snot indicates older bleeding that has dried up.
Here too, the presence of some blood in the runny nose is not necessarily a cause for stress.
Only if significant bleeding or bloody sputum appears should you consult a doctor.
And here are some other things you absolutely must know about rhinitis
Unilateral runny nose:
when the runny nose only comes out of one nostril for a long time - a fairly common phenomenon in children - you should check that there is no foreign body stuck in the nostril.
If over time green snot comes out of only one nostril, and it also stinks, the child probably put something foreign in the nose, and this object rotted there.
It happens quite a bit in general, and in such cases you should consult a doctor in order to remove the invader from the nostril.

smell of a runny nose
: A runny nose usually has no unusual smell.
If a pungent smell appears in the runny nose, this indicates an infectious process, and you should go to an otolaryngologist for an examination.
Posterior Rhinitis:
Runny nose does not just flow out of the nostrils but also comes down from the back nasal cavity.
When there is a lot of runny nose, it will also cause a lot of phlegm, which will cause coughing and a feeling of discomfort in the throat.
If there is a lot of phlegm over a long period of time, you should see a doctor.
How do you dry a runny nose?
In the first stages of the runny nose (transparent to light yellow), salt water rinses are the most recommended solution, both for children and adults.
If the runny nose also causes congestion in the nose (stuffy nose), you can use nasal drops that shrink the mucous membranes.
The drops do not dry out the dropsy, but improve the congestion, and can be used for no more than 5 days.
Salt water, the purpose of which is to dry the runny nose itself, can be used without limitation, at any age.
If it is an inflammatory runny nose (yellow-green) that comes with additional disease symptoms, sometimes there is a place for antibiotics.
