The prices for gas and electricity for consumers in Germany are enormous in the energy crisis.
Changing provider promises savings.
Hanover – The prices for gas and electricity for consumers in Germany have known only one direction, at least since the outbreak of the Ukraine war, and that is: steeply upwards.
In order to reduce costs, it is worth comparing prices, because changing gas or electricity suppliers can save you money.
According to the comparison portal Check24, there should be savings of up to 750 on average.
Changing electricity providers: Families can save more than 1,200 euros a year with 5,000 kWh consumption
For a family that consumes an average of around 5,000 kWh of electricity, savings are possible in 50 large cities in Germany if the provider is changed.
On average, according to the comparison portal, there is a saving of 447 euros.
The savings potential is currently greatest in the city of Cottbus in Brandenburg, because there the family that switches from the basic supply to a cheaper other provider would pay 1214 euros less a year for electricity.
In Munich in Bavaria it is similar.
Here is a saving of 963 euros per year.

"Many electricity customers will benefit from the electricity price brake in the coming year," says Steffen Suttner, Energy Manager at CHECK24.
“However, despite the electricity price brake, customers should regularly check their electricity tariffs in order to optimize the costs that are not capped.
As soon as new customer tariffs are offered below 40 cents per kilowatt hour, there is also significant potential for savings – even without an electricity price brake.”
A single household (1500 kWh) in Cottbus saves up to 424 euros per year by switching electricity providers.
On average in 50 German cities, which currently offer the highest savings potential, single households pay about 161 euros less with the cheapest alternative provider than with the basic service.
Change of gas supplier: family saves 332 euros (20,000 kWh) by switching to an alternative supplier
A model household (20,000 kWh) saves up to 1492 euros on its gas costs if it switches from the basic supply to the cheapest alternative provider in Moers, for example.
A family from Jena can save 1,222 euros a year with the cheapest alternative provider thanks to a new tariff.
On average in 20 German cities, with the currently highest savings potential, a family pays 332 euros less per year with the cheapest alternative provider.
"The gas price brake relieves consumers," says Steffen Suttner.
“Consumers can only achieve maximum savings by switching to a cheaper tariff.
Depending on the region, there are currently offers that are significantly cheaper than the local basic supply.”

It pays to change provider: 1135 price increases at the turn of the year in basic supply for electricity and gas
One reason for the savings potential: Many basic suppliers are increasing their prices.

A total of around eleven million households are affected.
For January there are 663 cases of electricity price increases in the basic supply.

In the case of gas, there were 472 cases of price increases in basic services in January.
The increases average 55.8 percent compared to September 30, 2022 and around 3.7 million households are affected.
