After a long investigation and nearly three years of filming in Saudi Arabia, American documentary filmmaker Meg Smaker had every reason to celebrate.
His film,
Jihad Rehab
, dedicated to the Saudi rehabilitation center for former jihadists, was selected for the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in Utah in January 2022.
The documentary features five former members of al-Qaeda: a Saudi and four Yemenis.
Captured by the Americans in Afghanistan, they spent ten years in the Guantanamo detention center in Cuba.
Some were tortured.
None have been tried.
The filmmaker films them, transferred to Saudi Arabia, as they follow the rehabilitation program in the semi-prison center created by the kingdom to reintegrate former jihadists into society.
She accompanies them in class, or during their interviews with a psychologist.
We see them playing table tennis, or swimming.
They express themselves...
