Especially at Christmas time, the workload of parcel and mail carriers is immense.

So why not show your appreciation with a tip?

Berlin – Christmas time is parcel time – and the parcel carriers from DHL, Hermes, DPD & Co. have their hands full.

Because instead of walking through the city in the cold, many prefer to order their gifts directly online.

Not only since Corona, the Germans are world champions when ordering on the Internet.

The workload of the couriers is increasing - overtime and constant stress are not uncommon - but anyone who wants to do something good for their supplier is confronted with two questions: Is it even permissible to give the postman or parcel carrier tips or gifts?

And if so, how much is reasonable?

Tipping post and parcel carriers: is that even allowed?

Since there is no uniform regulation for gifts and tips, the question must be clarified as to whether postmen and parcel carriers are allowed to accept gifts and tips at all.

This is defined differently depending on the company.

However, no consideration may be given, as this is then considered bribery.

Most delivery companies allow their employees to accept gifts and tips.

In most cases, however, a certain value must not be exceeded.

In addition, many companies have set upper limits for gifts that employees must adhere to.

At DHL for example

At the request of the news portal BR.de

 2020

, Dieter Nawrath from the Deutsche Post DHL Group announced that parcel carriers are allowed to accept tips and “small-value gifts in kind up to a value of 25 euros”  .

The situation is similar with its competitor Hermes: messengers are allowed to accept cash or gifts in kind, such as chocolate.

However, these must not exceed a value of 10 euros.

"DPD deliverers are also allowed to accept a tip," says Sebastian Zeh from DPD Germany to

.

This is even possible digitally, for example via PayPal.

"You can either use predefined levels of 1, 2 and 4 euros or enter your own amount," says Zeh.

Recipients could give the messenger a maximum of 9.50 euros.

Tips and gifts for post and parcel carriers: Failure to do so may result in dismissal

So how much tip is appropriate if you want to give one to the messenger?

A study came to the conclusion that the average of all tips in Germany is 2.50 euros.

That would have been the result of a survey among buyers.

Around half of all respondents would have paid messengers a tip, ten percent would have given small gifts such as pastries or chocolate.

If the employees do not follow the relevant instructions, they face consequences under labor law - from a warning to dismissal.

Employees are advised to find out about the relevant regulations from their supervisor.
