In the last day, two people choked to death from a donut, and another person choked but his life was saved.

The traditional food of Hanukkah can also be very dangerous if eaten quickly or not chewed well enough.

The donut has properties similar to a sponge - the sponge is soft, and when pressed it swells and returns to its original shape.

Like a sponge, when you take too big a bite out of a doughnut, the piece can block the opening of the trachea and swell there, which causes it to become firmly fixed and prevent any possibility of freeing the airway, by increasing the pressure in the chest.

Dr. Moshe Figdor, an expert in internal medicine and the medical director of the Tory Hospital in Mouchadat, Jerusalem, explains why it is possible to choke on food, how to prevent choking on a donut and what to do when a person chokes on food?

Why do we choke on food?

The opening of the trachea, through which the air is led to the lungs, and the opening of the esophagus leading to the stomach, are close to each other.

During swallowing, there is a kind of "cap" that temporarily closes the opening of the tube, so that the food enters the esophagus and through to the stomach.

While breathing or speaking the tube is open.

Choking can result from talking while eating, from eating too large bites that have not been chewed properly, or from a lack of synchronization in the swallowing mechanism, such as after a stroke, but also in a healthy person sometimes.

When the food is not chewed properly, it cannot be swallowed at once, and food residues that are in the oral cavity after swallowing, can slide into the barrel when the "cap" is opened.

In babies, the phenomenon of choking is much more common than in adults, because they like to put objects in their mouth unintentionally and sometimes swallow them, and while the opening of the tube is open, the object easily slides into the tube and blocks it.

How can you prevent choking from a donut?

  • Take small bites and chew them well in your mouth before swallowing.

  • For children it is recommended to cut the donut into small pieces, do not give the child a whole donut.

  • Small sips of water between bites help to soften the texture of the donut and take away the "spongy" feature.

What do you do when a person chokes on food?

1. The first thing is to dial 101 and urgently call an MDA intensive care mobile.

2. In babies under one year old, perform 5 puffs between the shoulder blades and immediately turn the baby face up and perform 5 pressures on the abdomen. Repeat the operation until the foreign body is released and the baby begins to breathe normally.

3. In a child over one year of age and in an adult, several pressures must be applied to the abdominal cavity until the foreign body comes out.

4. In women with advanced pregnancy, pressure should be applied at the level of the lower ribs in the front chest.

5. In case of loss of consciousness, basic resuscitation should be performed using massages in the center The thorax and the souls in a ratio of 30 massages to the 2 souls.
