Many consumers are afraid of horrendous heating costs due to the energy crisis - and therefore prefer to warm themselves with a thick sweater.

How much is that?

Saving energy is the order of the day in many households this winter.

According to a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov, even one in ten Germans did not heat their home by the end of November.

In order to keep warm, thick sweaters and socks or a scarf are usually used.

But is it actually possible to save energy by turning the heating down a few degrees and instead wearing cozy clothing to keep your body warm?

According to the dpa news agency, the energy consultancy of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomeranian consumer center did the billing.

This is how much you save if you turn down the heating thanks to warm clothing

The example calculation is based on the following starting point: The living rooms are heated to 24 degrees – i.e. level 4 on the mechanical thermostat – and outside there is an average of 5 degrees during the heating season.

That makes a difference of 19 degrees.

Anyone who now turns the temperature down to 20 degrees and thus to level 3 on the mechanical thermostat reduces consumption by 4/19.

That would be around 20 percent less.

In general, according to

Stiftung Warentest

, the rule of thumb applies: 1 degree less in the room can reduce heating costs by 6 percent.

There are about four degrees between two levels.

So if you dress a little thicker and turn it down to one or two degrees, you can definitely save on heating costs.

However, the temperature in the rooms should not fall below 16 degrees – otherwise there is a risk of mold.

Save heating costs: How to properly lower the temperature

It should also be noted that the costs are only saved in the room where the temperature has been turned down.

In order for the savings to be fully reflected in the annual bill, the temperature in all heated rooms must be lowered.

Another factor that affects heating costs are so-called heating losses, as the consumer advice center informs.

This is when heat escapes through chimneys or pipes into unheated areas of the home.

Accordingly, the losses do not decrease when the room temperature is lowered.
