in ancient Greece

Evidence of this can be found in Canto 11 of Homer's Odyssey, which describes a dish made from grated goat's cheese.

However, cheese fondue in its present form is first mentioned in a

cookbook from 1699

by Anna Maria Gessner, a

Swiss

.

It is and remains a mystery.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter who invented it.

What is certain is that cheese fondue definitely tastes best when

eaten in company

That's how it's done:

You need these ingredients:

  • For the garlic croutons:

  • 40 ml cooking oil

  • 1 clove of garlic

  • 200 g bread, diced

  • For the cheese fondue soup:

  • 400g fondue cheese

  • 200 ml white wine

  • 30 ml of kirsch

  • 1 clove of garlic

  • 0.5 tsp pepper

  • 600 ml broth

  • 5 g modified cornstarch (or sauce thickener)

  • For garnish:

  • chives, to taste

The preparation is so easy:

  • For the garlic croutons

    , heat the oil in a pan.

    Then sauté the garlic briefly and add the bread cubes.

    Fry the bread cubes on the stovetop, stirring occasionally, until golden and crispy.

    set aside.

  • For the cheese fondue soup

    , put the fondue cheese, white wine, kirsch, garlic and pepper in a saucepan.

    Then deglaze with broth and stir well.

    Then add the modified cornstarch.

    Cover and bring the soup to the boil.

    Finally, stir again until the soup has a creamy consistency.

  • Serve in deep plates and garnish with the garlic croutons and chives.

  • Let it melt in your mouth.
