Aldi wants to benefit from the Christmas business and is significantly reducing the price of butter.

A competitor is also following suit.

Munich – In addition to jam and fresh rolls, butter is a must at the classic German breakfast table.

The milk product is also popular apart from its use as a topping for bread, be it for a fine sauce, as fat for the baking pan or for frying the schnitzel.

But like most other staple foods, butter has had a wild ride in terms of price.

But Aldi has a pre-Christmas present ready for consumers, lowers the price and wants to benefit from the Christmas business.

Butter breaks the two-euro mark: Aldi in the Christmas price war

Rock-bottom prices for staple foods – Aldi is trying to use this strategy to set itself apart from its competitors.

A difficult task at a time when food prices are skyrocketing.

The consequences for the company if it breaks its price promise, it was recently able to experience with its own organic milk.

But shortly before Christmas, the discounter drastically lowers its price for at least one food item.

Previously, discounter customers had to pay 2.29 euros for a 250-gram pack of butter from the Aldi brand "Milram", reports

Lebensmittel Zeitung

(LZ)

.

Compared to the price tag at the beginning of the year of 1.65 euros, this is an increase of almost 40 percent.

In the meantime, butter is a popular object of special offers and price reductions in the run-up to Christmas.

Atypical for a discounter, its customers saved by reaching for discounted promotional goods from Weihenstephan or Meggle instead of the discounter's own brand "Milram".

Margarine as an alternative – sales down compared to the previous year

Aldi now wants to rectify this situation and is lowering the price for half a pound of butter to EUR 1.99, or EUR 7.96 per kilogram.

According to the LZ

, Rewe is

following suit and is offering promotional goods for the same price.

The

LZ

is observing a general trend towards falling prices on the market for dairy products.

It is unclear whether this will offset the consequences of the high butter price.

Compared to the previous year, the sales figures in October fell by almost ten percent.

It is reasonable to assume that price-conscious buyers are now turning to alternatives such as margarine.

On the one hand, costs can play a role.

On the other hand, with the price increase, the quality of the popular dairy product has also decreased, regardless of whether it was on the shelf of a discounter or supermarket.

Alternatively, consumers can save money by stocking up on discounted butter and storing it properly.

Because frozen butter can last up to nine months.
