French serial killer Charles Sobhraj, who committed several murders across Asia in the 1970s and inspired the Netflix series 'The Serpent', will be released from prison in the next few hours and could be transferred to France this evening.
This was stated by the Nepalese authorities and his lawyer.
In prison since 2003 for the murder of two American tourists, Sobhraj, 78, will be released on health grounds as ruled by the Supreme Court of Nepal.
The court also ordered that he be transferred to France within 15 days.
"Once taken to Immigration, it will be decided what will happen. He has a heart problem, he wants to be treated at Gangalal hospital," said his lawyer, Gopal Shiwakoti Chintan.
The serial killer needs open-heart surgery and his release complies with a Nepalese law that allows the release of bedridden prisoners who have already served three-quarters of their sentences.

"The Nepal government wants to send him back as soon as possible. Sobhraj also wants him. So I arranged a flight for him with Qatar Airways at 6pm. The French embassy is bringing him travel documents," his lawyer said to reporters
