When is the supermarket or discounter open at Christmas?

The opening hours on Christmas Eve at Aldi, Edeka, Rewe, Kaufland and Lidl differ.

Munich – Until when are the supermarkets or discounters open at Christmas?

A question that many customers and consumers ask themselves about last-minute shopping during supermarket opening times at Christmas or on Christmas Eve.

Quickly get the last few purchases for the feast on Christmas Eve or the holidays at Aldi, Lidl, Rewe, Kaufland or Edeka.

A well-known spectacle before the Christmas holidays.

It's the same game every year, even if food prices have risen drastically due to the Ukraine war and inflation, as a poor woman recently made clear with her Rewe deposit voucher.

In some cases, the opening hours of the supermarkets on Christmas Eve are used up to the very last second by customers.

However, anyone who finds themselves here should be prepared for the fact that discounters and supermarkets will not necessarily have their usual opening times even at Christmas 2022.

Christmas at Aldi, Lidl, Rewe, Kaufland and Edeka: Shorter opening times in supermarkets and discounters on Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday in 2022.

As is well known, December 24th is not a public holiday and therefore means that a large number of employees are still working.

Nevertheless, the legislator prescribes an end of opening hours in supermarkets and discounters at 2 p.m. for the day.

Shopping at Aldi, Lidl, Edeka, Kaufland or Rewe can get a little cramped.

But does this apply everywhere, or are there perhaps loopholes that consumers can use to orientate themselves so that they can shop in the supermarket even later at Christmas?

Lidl, Kaufland, Edeka, Rewe and Aldi are also open on Christmas Eve.

In principle, the shop opening times that are possible by law are regulated in the federal shop closing law and in the shop opening laws of the federal states, also for shopping in the supermarket.

However, the law also provides for exceptions to the general rule regarding opening times in supermarkets and discounters at Christmas.

Opening times in supermarkets and discounters on Christmas Eve: Aldi, Lidl, Kaufland, Rewe and Edeka in train stations or airports are open longer

Because if a branch of supermarket and discounter chains such as Aldi, Edeka, Rewe, Kaufland or Lidl is located in an airport or train station or in their immediate vicinity, other regulations apply again.

According to the Shop Closing Hours Act (LadSchlG), the shops and stores in a train station may even be open until 5 p.m. on Christmas to do the shopping in the supermarket on Christmas Eve.

A regulation that also applies to supermarkets at ferry ports.

Here, too, the so-called basic suppliers can open their doors for shopping at Christmas until 5 p.m. at the latest.

In general, however, it is worth taking a look at the notice board of the respective shop.

There are also exceptions for petrol stations and pharmacies on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

For example, emergency pharmacies may remain open 24 hours from December 24th to 26th.

This also applies to gas stations.

Aldi, Edeka, Kaufland, Rewe and Lidl: Opening times of supermarkets at Christmas 2022 may differ depending on the branch

But back to the discounters and supermarkets and their opening times.

Depending on the region, but also depending on the federal state, the opening times for shopping at Christmas 2022 may differ at Aldi, Edeka, Kaufland, Rewe, Lidl and the like.

Practically, before the planned shopping trip, you can use the online branch search to check the time frame in which the branch of the respective supermarket chain is open.

Check opening times in supermarkets and discounters online at Christmas: until when do you shop at Aldi, Lidl, Edeka, Kaufland and Rewe on Christmas Eve

This offer regarding the opening times in the supermarket or discounter at Christmas is offered by Aldi Nord, Aldi Süd, Lidl, Rewe, Edeka, Netto, Penny, Kaufland and Real.

However, if you find this too cumbersome, you can alternatively search for the desired branch using Google Maps.

Because the opening times can also be displayed in this way so that you can quickly shop for the roast for Christmas 2022.

This is how supermarkets and discounters are open on December 24th, 2022: Opening times on Christmas Eve for Aldi, Lidl, Kaufland, Rewe and Edeka

When are the supermarkets open at Christmas?

A question that is not so easy to answer, as the opening times of Aldi, Lidl, Kaufland, Rewe, Edeka and Co. can vary on Christmas Eve.

Because it must also be mentioned that in some branches of the respective discounters and supermarkets, the opening times at Christmas are determined by the respective market management.

As a result, opening times can vary even within the same city.

  • Opening hours in supermarkets and discounters on Christmas: until when Aldi, Lidl, Edeka, Kaufland, Rewe and Co. are open on Christmas Eve

  • Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd: Usually from 7 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. or 2 p.m.

  • Lidl: Usually from 7.00 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. or 2.00 p.m.

  • Edeka: Usually from 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. (branch managers can set their own opening times).

  • Rewe: Usually between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m., locally also from 6 a.m. or 6.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (branch managers can set their own opening times).

  • Net: Usually from 6:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

  • Kaufland: Usually from 6.30 a.m. or 7.00 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. or 2.00 p.m.

  • Penny: Usually from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

In general, the opening times of the individual discounters and supermarkets at Christmas can be listed at least roughly in advance.

In case of doubt and in individual cases, as already mentioned, these should be checked again using the branch search or Google Maps.

However, one thing can already be said with certainty: the supermarkets and discounters will definitely be closed on the two Christmas holidays, i.e. on December 25th and 26th, and the increased food prices for consumers will not change that.

Shopping at Lidl, Aldi, Edeka, Rewe and Kaufland on Christmas Eve: Shopkeepers advise against visiting the supermarket or discounter despite opening hours

However, the majority of shop owners advise potential customers not to venture into their supermarket or discounter on the home straight on Christmas Eve.

Despite the opening times at Christmas, they refer to immensely long queues at the cash registers of Lidl, Aldi, Edeka, Kaufland or Rewe.

For this reason, you should take care of all your errands beforehand so that you don't get annoyed about possibly sold-out goods.

But if there is no other way, there are a few tips to make Christmas shopping less stressful and to avoid full parking lots or long queues.

Good pre-planning is the key to success in order to ring in the Christmas days with as little stress as possible.

Not like an Edeka customer, who only gets upset after looking at his deposit slip.

And one thing should be clear at this time of year anyway.

Because of Christmas Eve and the upcoming Christmas holidays, you shouldn't use sentences that annoy and "hear 100 times a day" with discount store and supermarket employees at Aldi, Edeka, Kaufland, Lidl or Rewe.
