Between the show biz industry and yeshiva studies: this is the new gospel of Shay Gebso | Israel today

2022-12-26T10:14:05.772Z

He is no longer religious, but he shares that "spirituality is the main artery of my life" • He became famous as a singer, but actually "dreams of being an actor since I was a child" • Gebso wrote the play "The Shining World", and in an interview he tells how the dots in his life connect

The story of Shay Gebso could easily be turned into a movie.

The young singer who was exposed in "Kohav Nold" was looking for himself in the world of music, while at the same time discovering the world of acting.

He later married and divorced, and his name was often associated with issues such as sexual identity and religious identity.

Gebso's story becomes a drama that he wrote (and also composed together with Shelly Binman), which will be staged at the Beit Lisin Theater as part of the "Opening a Stage" festival, directed by Liat Fishman.

The play, "The Shining World", unfolds the story of a young singer and creator who wins a reality competition, and who, with his meteoric rise, is exposed to the intrigues of the entertainment world.

He turns his back on his ambitious mother, tries to escape fame and finds refuge in yeshiva studies.

While dealing with the gap between his desire to create and his desire for truth and faith, he rediscovers his inner voice and gains true love.

Einat Sharoff, Daniel Moreshet, Itamar Elbaz, Hagar Engel, Sapir Baumval, Avitar Ben David, Tal Amar and Khan Tamir will also play alongside Gebso.

This is not the first time Gabso has flirted with the theater.

The one who won third place in the mythological opening season of "Kohav Nold", and first place in the previous season of "The Masked Singer", had time to star at the Bima Theater in the play "Cooks", and wrote "Except for Love, There is Nothing Between Us", a play that was staged at the Alley Theater directed by Erez Hasson .

From "The Masked Singer",

"This is a bigger project than the previous play I wrote. It's a musical that lasts almost two hours. It's definitely a development of the previous things I've done," says Gabso (38).

How much of what appears in the play is inspired by your personal life?

"These are not events that happened in my life, but definitely situations that I was present in. There are many things that have changed, but of course behind everything an artist does is his life experience. I know that many people will think that this is the story of my life (laughs), but I have no way to convince Others don't."

Still, the plot lines are quite parallel to your story.

"Of course, only in my life story I repented alone at the age of 12, and when I appeared on the screen at the age of 18, I was already religious. Here the character repents only at the height of success. The musical is called 'The World of the Shining', and it actually touches on both directions of the world of the Shining, and more so in the secret world. I think this is also what sets the story apart from other things about the religious world that are on the stage. Here it's more the hidden spiritual places, with lots of fantasy and magic, like in Disney movies.

"I wrote it as a musical, because I felt that the songs and the magic are what will bring what really takes place in this way and in this search. It also caught my partners at Beit Lisin. Right now it will be staged as a reading with 12 actors and seven musicians. The goal is that after that we will go into a full production And that it will be performed as a complete play in the theater."

Speaking of spirituality, what is left of it in your routine today?

"Spirituality is the main artery of my life. I am alive and present and feel the energy, the presence, the divinity - let everyone call it whatever they want. It connects to me with music and art, it is there and it exists for me, but not in the way of observing mitzvot. Today I'm not a religious person, not at all. But I also don't like this term of 'repeating the question.' I found many other answers."

How do you combine the fields of acting and music?

"I always thought, even as a child, that I would be an actor. I would write entire seasons of series in notebooks. After 'A Star Is Born' I focused on music because it captivated me, and only after a few years did I enter more into the field of acting. It happened when I felt that I could spread out to more places and do both" .

Today, he says, "I also play in the musical 'Fiddler on the Roof' of the Hebrew Theater, and we are also working on a new album. We shot a music video for the first single that will be released soon, called 'We haven't spoken in two years.' what was happening in my heart at the time. It was produced by Tom Elbaz, and I wrote it with two other young writers, Meitav Kovacs and Lee Osher. We cooked with it and started recording, then another song came, and another, and suddenly there is an album. At the same time, I'm also working about a new show".

The "Opening the Stage" festival for Israeli plays will take place on December 28 to 31 at the Beit Lisin Theater named after Baruch Ivcher.
