(ANSA) - NEW YORK, DECEMBER 26 - West Point expels the Confederates from the campus: the prestigious military academy has launched a process that will lead over the next few months to the removal of the symbols of the slave-owning South.
When West Point students return to school after the Christmas break, they will no longer find a portrait of General Robert Lee dressed in a Confederate uniform in the library, academy superintendent General Steven Gilland announced.
Also to be removed is a stone bust of Lee, who was himself Superintendent of West Point before leading the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
In all, West Point has identified a dozen monuments or objects that recall the cause of the Confederates: they will be put into storage in the first months of 2023. (ANSA).
