When Christmas is over, sooner or later the Christmas tree has to go.

It can be disposed of sustainably – but you mustn’t throw it in the forest.

It is at the center of the Christmas celebrations: the Christmas tree.

The gifts are given underneath him, the crib is standing, Christmas carols are sung and he fills the room with the appropriate holiday mood for the Christmas feast.

For this purpose, it is decorated with balls, ornaments, lights or even tinsel every year.

Some people decorate their Christmas tree on the first Sunday of Advent, others just before Christmas and some remove the decorations right after the holidays, while others wait until January 6th, Epiphany.

No matter when and how long you have the Christmas tree in the living room, one thing is the same in most cases: If it is no longer needed, it is carelessly thrown away.

There are much more sensible and sustainable methods of disposing of the Christmas tree.

The Christmas tree is a tree and therefore a natural product, but you shouldn't simply dispose of the fir tree in the forest after Christmas.

The same rule applies here that also applies to green waste, grass and leaves: the Christmas tree is considered waste and must not simply be thrown into nature.

Violators of this rule can even face a fine.

Instead, there are several legal ways to dispose of Christmas trees that may not even cost you anything.

This includes, for example, donating the tree, using it in your own garden, having it picked up or taking it to the recycling center.

Also not allowed: throwing away the decorated tree.

Even if you've had enough of the old decorations after Christmas, you shouldn't dispose of the tree including the jewelry with any of these options.

Even the last strip of tinsel does not belong in the collection point or on the compost in the garden.

Dispose of or recycle Christmas trees: There are these contact points and options

If you want to dispose of your Christmas tree after the holidays, you have a number of options.

You can hand in the fir tree to the recycling center after Christmas, for example.

There it is recycled and that usually costs nothing or only a small fee.

Some cities also set up collection points where you can hand in your Christmas tree, or organize pick-up services that collect the trees like garbage cans from the street in front of the house.

These can be organized either by the local waste management company, by the municipality or by non-profit or church associations.

Just ask your local authority how it is handled at home.

In some cities it is also possible to donate Christmas trees to the zoo or animal park for the enclosures.

However, it is better to find out beforehand whether there is a need.

Sustainable Christmas tree: use or rent a fir tree

If you have a house with a garden, you can also shred the Christmas tree and dispose of it in your own compost.

This is even good for this one, because the dry branches aerate the pile.

In addition, the tree can be used in parts in a very sustainable way.

If the branches have not yet lost all their needles, then the coniferous twigs are perfect for covering beds or the trunks of small trees in the garden as winter protection.

Incidentally, this also works with plants on the balcony that are in tubs.

Simply cover the earth with the branches and you have a natural protection against the cold.

You can also use the needles to make scented oil.

If you pour sunflower oil over a handful of pine needles and let it sit for a few weeks, you end up with homemade pine scented oil.

A very environmentally friendly, but still far too little used variant is to rent a Christmas tree or to buy it alive.

A fir tree is rented from a supplier, delivered by the supplier and picked up again after Christmas.

The lasting thing about it is that the plant stands with its roots in a pot and can be planted again after Christmas and continue to grow.

If you buy a Christmas tree with roots in a pot, you get the tree on the same principle, but you can keep it after Christmas and plant it in the garden yourself.
