Many people leave their winter jackets on in the car when the temperature is low.
But the ADAC warns: This could be life-threatening.
Kassel – If you get into your car in cold winter weather, the first thing you probably do is turn on the heating.
But it can take a while before it is cozy and warm inside the car.
There is a great temptation to get behind the wheel in a thick winter jacket.
But that can quickly become very dangerous, as a test by the ADAC shows.
Because if you sit wrapped up in the car, it's not just that it's harder to move.
And the belt is in the wrong place on the body.
Because the winter clothes are thick and soft, the belt has too much slack.
It can then be located in the lower abdomen and not, as would be ideal, in the hip bones in adults and in the thighs in children.
This poses many dangers.

Jacket, scarf & Co.: ADAC warns against thick winter clothing in the car
The ADAC reports that serious injuries to the internal organs can occur even at low speeds.
Soft tissues such as the intestines, liver or spleen can be injured in an impact.
Even internal bleeding is possible.
The ADAC found out in a test with crash test dummies.
An adult and a child dummy were strapped to a seat.
The ADAC then simulated a rear-end collision at low speed.
With devastating results – for both children and adults.
At the beginning of the year, TÜV Süd also warned against wearing too thick clothing in the car.
Clothing | Danger |
---|---|
winter jacket | Belt is incorrectly seated and hurts when braking |
scarf/hat | restricted view |
gloves | no firm grip on the steering wheel |
thick boots | no sensitivity to the pedals |
Driving in winter: ADAC recommends alternatives to thick winter clothing
The ADAC warns that other winter clothing can also be dangerous for the driver of a car.
Hats and scarves can impair vision and gloves can impair a firm grip on the steering wheel.
The Automobile Club also advises against thick winter boots.
They therefore prevent sensitive operation of the gas and brake pedals.

So that young and old do not have to freeze in the car, the ADAC recommends a blanket that has been preheated in the house beforehand.
Jackets could also be put on over the belt in a pinch.
A parking heater or the preheating function in an electric car could also help.
The ADAC also has a few tips ready for other problems that drivers can encounter in winter.
He reveals, for example, how you should behave when there is black ice on the streets and which home remedies you should avoid using when de-icing the window.
