In his service, there is “about 20% additional activity compared to last year at the same period, with saturation in intensive care”.

“We mainly have calls for pneumonia, including the flu and the Covid”, adds Benjamin Davido, infectious disease specialist at Raymond Poincaré hospital (Garches).

His case is far from isolated.

Everywhere in France, hospital services are saturated.

The Minister of Health, François Braun, even spoke on Wednesday of a "week of all dangers" concerning this truce for confectioners between Christmas and New Year. Not only is the flu still advancing rapidly, but caregivers have also put their vacation (well deserved).

The directions did not force them to postpone their vacation, because "they know it would be war", testifies a nurse from the Ile-de-France, exhausted.

Also taking into account the doctors, nurses and caregivers who have left the profession in recent months, "our schedules no longer hold in the event of staff contamination", warns Benjamin Davido.

In addition, the strike of liberal doctors since Monday, deemed "unwelcome" by François Braun, amplifies the saturation of emergency services.

Offset peaks

Despite everything, "the mobilization of personnel is absolutely complete and the system manages to hold up", assured the minister.

In Île-de-France, the Regional Health Agency launched on Christmas Eve a “solemn appeal for the mobilization of all, in particular liberal professionals and private health establishments”, to deal with this critical period.

The only good news in this very tense context, the “triple epidemic” bronchiolitis, Covid-19 and flu did not peak at the same time.

As for bronchiolitis in toddlers under 2 years of age, the indicators peaked at the end of November.

The number of emergency room visits and hospitalizations fell last week for the third consecutive time.

For Covid, the peak was reached shortly after mid-December, around 1,500 daily hospital admissions

(pending the very likely 10th wave early next year).

So there remains the flu, still in the ascending phase.

Public Health France insists on the importance of vaccination and respect for barrier gestures.

The fact remains that, at the beginning of December, less than one in five French people said they wore a mask in an enclosed place and less than one in two said they washed their hands regularly, according to the CoviPrev survey.

And Benjamin Davido to conclude: "We are off to a bad start for 2023."
