Weather: "New Year's Eve in shorts and sandals"

2022-12-28T16:38:43.438Z

2022 will probably be the warmest year since measurements began in Germany. And the previous New Year's high should easily be exceeded, says Jörg Kachelmann. How can this be explained?

How is it looking?

In Germany we are experiencing the warmest year since measurements began and we will probably also experience the warmest New Year's Day since weather observations have been made - the previous record is 17.0 degrees in Müllheim in Baden, which we will easily beat, it looks like.

How can this be explained?

As you can see here, the air comes to us from North Africa.

Normally, the air would cool down substantially on the voyage over the Mediterranean.

However, large parts of the Mediterranean Sea can still be bathed in if you are not very demanding, and the warm air that comes to us is two to four degrees warmer than the long-term average.

As a result, we will get new records for many places in Germany.

What's next?

It stays warm, especially on New Year's Eve the temperatures will be unusual.

When the German man then feels the call of the wild and has to set off fireworks obsessively, he can do this in shorts, white socks and sandals, appropriate to the species, because temperatures in the North German lowlands are still around 16 degrees (more on this here).

This is often the level, even in midsummer, that one encounters at midnight between Dümmer and Steinhuder Meer.

Even after that, the heat doesn't go away and valley descents in the ski areas of the Alps are still not an issue, as can be seen from the example of Oberstdorf (other locations via menu).

What should I do?

You have just read that we have experienced the warmest year since measurements began in Germany.

Consider that this did not require any conspicuous extreme heat.

Climate change is a permanent process that does not have to be tied to extreme events.

It's always there and most of the time it's not climate change when everyone's super excited and claiming it was it - snow in the US and arson in the Harz Mountains have nothing to do with climate change.

If you worry, you must always worry.

It is something that is always there and always progressing.

And what are you doing?

I'm in Switzerland in the countryside.

It's pretty quiet at midnight.

They are considerate of the cows because it is assumed that the shooting will hit them hard on the abomasum.

If you don't confuse speeding on the freeway with »freedom«, you don't have to do other stupid things just because you can.
