Aldi is not just Aldi.

Not only customers know that.

Because there is Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd.

Whereby the cardinal point in the name should not always be taken too literally.

Munich – A border still runs through Germany more than 30 years after reunification.

The so-called Aldi equator.

This separates the distribution areas of the Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd branches.

The former was taken over by Theo Albrecht when it was divided up in 1961, while the latter was managed by his brother Karl Albrecht.

Since then, the Federal Republic has been divided in two.

According to its own statements, Aldi Nord now has 2,220 branches and 38,000 employees in Germany, Aldi Süd has 1,980 branches and more than 49,600 employees.

However, unlike the dividing line between the northern and southern hemispheres, the Aldi equator does not run straight from east to west, but is at least partially based on the borders of the federal states.

Aldi equator in Germany: Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia are divided between north and south

The dividing line in the east initially runs between Bavaria and Saxony as well as Bavaria and Thuringia, which can be traced back to the existence of the former GDR.

Hesse is split roughly down the middle, with the north-sloping arc running south of Marburg.

North Rhine-Westphalia was also divided up, with significantly more space belonging to the Aldi-Nord cosmos.

In the most populous federal state, the Aldi equator initially runs northwest until it turns north of Cologne, runs along between Mülheim and Essen and finally heads for the federal border with the Netherlands between Rhede and Borken.

They are rarely so close to each other: Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd are not only at home in Germany.

Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd: From a geographical point of view, the name does not always mean the program

Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and parts of Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia are therefore Aldi-Süd areas.

In addition to Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg, northern Hesse and most of North Rhine-Westphalia, the new federal states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia and all of Berlin are also home to Aldi Nord.

This division means that branches of Aldi Süd can be located further north than branches of Aldi Nord.

Likewise, branches of Aldi Nord can be located further south than branches of Aldi Süd.

Sounds funny, but that's how it is.

Aldi curiosity uncovered: Aldi Süd branch in North Rhine-Westphalia more north than several Aldi Nord branches

This curious circumstance was also noticed by a user who decided to shop at Aldi Süd in Bottrop-Kirchhellen instead of in one of the three Aldi Nord branches in Gladbeck-Zweckel to the south-east.

Another user commented in disbelief on his reference to Twitter, including the proof of Google Maps: "Error in the matrix?"

But the solution is simple: Aldi equator.

Its course leads between the two parts of the city mentioned.

But it only gets really wild at the ends of the dividing line.

Because the northernmost of all Aldi-Süd branches has settled in Bocholt in North Rhine-Westphalia, the southernmost Aldi-Nord branch is in Adorf in Vogtland in Saxony and was only opened at the end of 2020.

This means that the northernmost Aldi Süd branch is more than 160 kilometers north of the southernmost Aldi Nord branch.

Which also means that the southernmost Aldi Nord branch was opened more than 160 kilometers south of the northernmost Aldi Süd branch.

Aldi international: North stores in Spain and Portugal, South stores in the US and UK

For people who are obsessed with order, Aldi still has a few reasons to pull their hair out.

As already mentioned, the new federal states belong to the area of ​​Aldi Nord, but in the Thuringian town of Sonneberg near the border with Bavaria, a branch of Aldi Süd was actually built.

However, it gets really crazy when you look abroad: Spain and Portugal, which are known to be located quite far in southern Europe, belong to Aldi Nord's distribution area.

Aldi Süd, on the other hand, has branches in the USA and the UK.

Outside the Federal Republic, however, country by country is neatly separated.

So there is only a real Aldi equator in Germany.

And this even separates entire cities.

There are north and south branches in Gummersbach and in Siegen.

This may confuse some people, but it has an unbeatable advantage: Here, customers can choose between the different ranges without having to take a long detour.

A man is supposed to buy chives from Aldi and gets laughs online with the result.

Because she only pays eleven instead of 27 euros, an Aldi customer is celebrated for her simple trick.
