Attention: With a clever trick you can get even more free vacation days in 2023.

Frankfurt – After 2022, the bridging days in 2023 will be much friendlier for employees.

Instead of eight, there are only three public holidays on a weekend.

A look at the calendar shows this.

For holiday and travel planning, this means that you have to apply for fewer days and still have longer free time.

In 2023 it is actually possible to get more than double the free time with your vacation.

Clever tricks can be used to get a particularly large number of days off.

You can read how this works here.

Weekend days are automatically considered days off.

Bridge days 2023: How to plan your vacation most efficiently

After the year 2022 is declared over on New Year's Eve, the new year starts as always with a public holiday.

However, New Year's Day in 2023 falls on a Sunday.

But a few days later, people in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Saxony-Anhalt can be happy again: the "Epiphany" holiday on January 6th is on a Friday this time.

If employees want to take vacation here, they can ultimately get seven for four days - if they apply from January 2nd to 5th.

With the right planning, the bridging days can be used to get a few days of "extra vacation".

Although February comes without a holiday, there is still another chance in the following month.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin, International Women's Day on March 8th is a public holiday.

This falls on a Wednesday in 2023.

If you take March 6th and 7th and then March 9th and 10th off here, you can get a full nine days with the following weekend days, although only four are taken.

In April, a clever trick can be used to double the vacation days – thanks to Good Friday (April 7) and the Easter holidays (April 9 and April 10).

With the surrounding weekends, it is possible to get time off in the period from April 1st to April 16th, although only eight days are requested.

There is always time for a longer trip here.

More vacation thanks to bridging days in 2023?

This is how you get the most out of it

May already starts with Labor Day.

This falls on a Monday in 2023.

If employees take vacation here from May 2nd to 5th, they get three extra days.

A few weeks later, Ascension Day on Thursday (May 18), the next public holiday.

If you only take the bridging day (May 19) off, four days can be squeezed out here with the following weekend.

In addition, the Pentecost holidays in 2023 do not fall in June, but on May 28th and 29th.

With only four days of vacation, you can still enjoy nine days off from May 27th to June 4th.

In June, Corpus Christi (June 8) is a public holiday in some federal states, including Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland.

If vacation is requested for the following Friday (June 9), four days off can be used.

Here employees can ultimately get seven days of vacation for four days of vacation a week.

Bridge days in 2023: What employees should know

The next nationwide public holiday is already at the beginning of October: If you apply for vacation one day before the Day of German Unity (Tuesday, October 3rd) and then three more days, employees can dust off a total of nine.

Reformation Day – October 31 – is a public holiday in nine German federal states.

Here, too, with a look at the calendar in Lower Saxony, Brandenburg and Thuringia, for example, four days can be taken, but nine days off can be won at the same time.

Wednesday, November 1st is All Saints' Day.

However, this is a public holiday in only five federal states, namely Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland.

All of these are exempt from Reformation Day.

Still, people can get nine vacation days there even though they only apply for four, on October 30th and 31st and finally on November 2nd and 3rd.

In Saxony, the Day of Repentance and Prayer (November 22nd) is a public holiday.

Here it is possible to get five days off for two vacation days.

December ends with Christmas Day and Boxing Day (December 25 and 26), which fall on a Monday and Tuesday in 2023.

If you want to take a holiday all the way through to the New Year, you can only look forward to ten days off if you apply for three days (December 27th to 29th), because New Year's Day falls on a Monday in 2024.

So it's worth taking a look at the calendar before planning - because if you plan your vacation cleverly, you can get a lot of days off in 2023.
