It was not a good year for Alfons Schuhbeck, according to media reports the star chef will have to close his "Südtiroler Stuben" in Munich at the end of the year. Apparently rent arrears are the reason.

Tuna tartare with caviar, king prawn ravioli, filet mignon: the New Year's Eve menu in Alfons Schuhbeck's "Südtiroler Stuben" in Munich reads classy.

It will likely be the celebrity chef's last party at his gourmet restaurant, which he ran for 19 years.

Because the lease expires on December 31, 2022, as several media reports.

The reason for this is said to be rent arrears, the rent was not paid or was paid irregularly.

"We have had problems with our tenant Alfons Schuhbeck since 2020," said a spokesman for the location agency to "t-online".

The agency rents out the premises.

"The last evening in the Südtiroler Stuben is also the last evening of the year," says the restaurant's website.

The New Year's Eve menu is advertised there: "Be there when an era comes to an end." According to the menu, Schuhbeck's guests pay 195 euros for what will probably be his last appearance for the time being.

In October of this year, Schuhbeck was sentenced to three years and two months in prison for tax evasion.

The Munich I Regional Court considered it proven that Schuhbeck had evaded taxes amounting to millions.

An employee accused of aiding and abetting received a suspended sentence of one year.

It is still unclear when Schuhbeck will have to serve his sentence.

He had appealed the verdict.

»High criminal energy«

The court saw it as proven that Schuhbeck had withdrawn around five million euros from the tills in his two Munich restaurants "Orlando" and "Südtiroler Stuben" over several years by manipulating sales.

For this he used, among other things, a computer program written by his employee.

The manipulations resulted in a tax liability of 2.3 million euros.

When the verdict was announced, the court found that Schuhbeck had “high criminal energy”.

Contrary to what the defense originally presented, it is not a typical gastro case in which landlords take money from the tills, but complex manipulations.

"Therefore, in our opinion, there was nothing else possible than imprisonment."

However, it is unclear how Schuhbeck intends to vacate his restaurant in time for the end of the rental period - he is unlikely to ask his current guests to go home before midnight.
