A strawberry farmer from East Westphalia makes his Edeka discovery public: he can only shake his head when he looks at the price of the fruit.

Delbrück - strawberries in December!

You really don't have to be an expert in fruit growing to know that this doesn't quite go together.

It's not the season.

This essentially lasts from June to July in Germany, sometimes starting a little earlier or ending a little later.

But December is far from that.

Now, of course, all fans of the fruit should be treated to it in the middle of winter if they really don't want to do without the strawberry cake.

But it is something other than the mere existence of the bowls in the fresh food area that makes a strawberry farmer suspicious when visiting Edeka and what makes him shake his head on Twitter: The price irritates him!

1.49 euros for 250 grams.

Edeka offers strawberries for six euros a kilo - the local farmer shakes his head

On his Twitter profile, the man describes himself as "an old farmer on a strawberry farm, let's make the world a little better" - and even if this is of course not confirmed, it is very likely that he is the operator of several strawberry plantations around Delbrück ( East Westphalia) with at least eight locations according to the website.

He writes on December 29: “Today at Edeka, strawberries from Egypt.

Almost €6 per kg.

For the price, we can't offer any picked goods during the harvest." In the first 24 hours or so, he collects around 120 "likes" and a few replies.

“In terms of taste, it probably doesn’t deserve a prize either,” says one user.

Now the strawberry farmer is unlikely to have bought the fruit from Egypt, but dares to make a prognosis: "No, they don't taste good either."

Edeka: Growers are worried about cheap strawberries

He combines this with an anxious look at the next few months: "What we're worried about is more about

Pentecost, that's quite early in 2023, with an early harvest we'll have plenty, and if it's delivered cheaply from all over the world, then local fruit won't be bought."

In a conversation with colleagues from BW24, Kathrin Walter from the State Association of Commercial Fruit Growers in Baden-Württemberg (LVEO) and LVEO President Franz Josef Müller drew attention to the difficult situation in the sector a good six months ago.

This was preceded by reports of destroyed defense fields as a result of disastrous prices.

Another user is now backing the local heritage farmer and his colleagues on Twitter.

"This is a big bummer.

My favorite place to buy strawberries in summer is at the strawberry stands that look like strawberries.

At least then I know that they're from around the corner.” The plantation operator gives a thumbs up: “From the beginning of June we'll be one step ahead.

Then the harvest in the south will be over.” Of course, everyone can make their own purchasing decision.

But at least the farmer managed to draw the focus to the local industry with the Edeka photo.

And also a bit on his plantations.

A Kaufland customer wasn't very happy with her "fresh" purchases.
