Hartz IV becomes citizen income, pensions are to be increased and housing allowances are to be increased.

In addition, many families should be financially relieved in 2023.

The new year brings with it many changes that affect many people in Germany financially - from families with children to pensioners.

Find out more about the most important innovations for 2023 here.

Citizens’ income will replace Hartz IV in January 2023 – higher standard rates

Citizens' income replaces the Hartz IV system in January.

Punctually at the beginning of the year, the new citizens' allowance is to be paid out to those in need in Germany, as the German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

The payments in the basic security increase accordingly by more than 50 euros.

Regarding the higher standard rates, dpa specifically wrote: “From January 1st, single and single parents entitled to benefits will receive 502 euros a month, for two adult partners in a so-called community of needs 451 euros each.

For young people between the ages of 15 and 18, 420 euros flow.

Children from the age of 7 to the age of 14 receive 348 euros.

318 euros will be paid for children up to the age of 6.” According to the dpa, significant parts of the reform will not come into force until July 1st.

“The job centers should be able to take better care of the unemployed.

Placement in permanent work instead of simple helper jobs should be better than before.”

Pension increase 2023 in sight - and important innovation for early retirees with a part-time job

Pensioners in Germany can probably expect more money in 2023: In western Germany, pensions are expected to rise by around 3.5 percent in July and by a good 4.2 percent in eastern Germany.

With a pension of 1,000 euros, that would mean an increase of around 35 euros in the west and 42 euros in the east.

The data is preliminary, according to the dpa, there will be clarity in the spring.

There is also an important innovation in the new year: from January, early retirees with a part-time job can earn as much as they want without their pension being reduced.

At the beginning of December, the Bundestag decided that the additional earnings limit for early retirement pensions should be abolished from 2023 without replacement.

Incidentally, there should also be significant improvements for recipients of a disability pension from 2023:

Child benefit will be increased to a uniform 250 euros per child and month in 2023

Numerous families are to be financially relieved in 2023: the child benefit will be increased to a uniform 250 euros for each child per month.

This means a plus of 31 euros for the first and second child and a plus of 25 euros per month for the third child.

According to the Federal Employment Agency, parents who have already received child benefit or who have successfully applied for it do not have to do anything - the amounts are automatically adjusted and paid out in the new year at the new amount.

The same applies to the child supplement for low-income families, which will increase from 2023.

Housing benefit will increase in 2023 - more households should benefit from the subsidy in the future

In terms of housing benefit, an improvement is in sight for many of those affected in 2023: up to 1.4 million more households are to be added to the 600,000 housing benefit households so far, dpa reported.

The housing benefit should also be increased by an average of 190 euros per month.

Eligible households thus receive “on average around 370 euros per month”.

According to the dpa, households that do not receive social benefits but still have little money can apply for housing benefit.

This applies to both tenants and owners of apartments and houses who use their own home.

You can use the official housing benefit calculator to find out whether you are already entitled to housing benefit.

Midi jobs changes in 2023 at earnings cap

There is also an innovation in the so-called midi jobs – in terms of the earnings limit.

"Employees in this group may earn 2,000 euros instead of 1,600 euros in the future," reported dpa.

Up to this limit, employees have to pay lower social security contributions.
