Several measures were taken by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research during the year 2022, with the aim of improving the scientific and academic reality, linking graduates to the labor market, supporting scientific research, and increasing the rate of student absorption in some specializations, as the number of students studying in universities, institutes and bodies affiliated to the Ministry in various years and education patterns reached “regular, parallel, open, private and virtual” about 650 thousand male and female students.

Admission of all successful students in the general secondary certificate in all its branches in universities and institutes affiliated with the Ministry, as the number of new students for the current academic year reached 131,892 male and female students.

Focusing on increasing the number of seats for some specializations needed by the labor market, developing study plans and curricula in line with the requirements of scientific and technological development, and benefiting from laws and legislation recently issued on the development of the higher education sector, educational hospitals and university cities, to provide the appropriate environment for education and scientific research.

Increasing the admission rate for parallel education to 50 percent instead of 40 percent, to increase the chances of admission to public universities.

Conducting a central comparison for medical colleges in private universities, and approving the desire for the preparatory year “general and parallel, and grants allocated in private universities” in one card for the general comparison.

Activating the applied and practical aspects and training programs, developing the university textbook through the gradual transition to a digital book, focusing on applied colleges, paying attention to scientific research, linking research to the labor market and the industry sector, improving the classification of Syrian universities, and participating in international scientific activities and events.

Opening of university buildings, college departments and laboratories:

The opening of the presidency building of the University of Hama, student engineering departments and ceremonies in the Faculty of Architecture, and a number of laboratories in the Faculty of Agriculture in the city of Salamiyah in the eastern countryside of Hama, at a total cost of more than 1.5 billion Syrian pounds.

The opening of the student service center at the University of Aleppo.

Opening of Nafath Virtual University Center in Damascus Central Prison.

The inauguration of the Martyr Basil Al-Assad Sports Club in the University City of Damascus.

Scholarships, cooperation agreements and scientific research funding:

The Ministry announced a number of scholarships and study seats for undergraduate and postgraduate studies “Master’s and PhD” for Syrian students, provided by Russia, Iran, Egypt, Belarus, Brunei, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Cuba and Serbia, in various scientific disciplines.

Signing a cooperation agreement with the National Union of Syrian Students and the Jarih al-Watan project, to ensure that the wounded have access to the opportunities and facilities required for education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Signing the executive program of the joint memorandum of understanding signed in Tehran last year, with the aim of strengthening cooperation in the field of higher education and scientific research, and concluding direct twinning agreements between Syria and Iran.

Announcing a competition for the appointment of teaching assistants in the universities of Damascus, Aleppo, Tishreen, Al-Baath, Al-Furat, Hama, Tartous, and the National Institute of Public Administration in various disciplines, in preparation for dispatching them to obtain the academic qualification required for appointment to the faculty membership.

The Higher Commission for Scientific Research signs funding contracts for 13 applied research projects in the sectors of “industry, agriculture, environment, alternative energies, economy, education, and information and communication technology,” with a total budget of 356 million and 525 thousand Syrian pounds.

The most prominent decisions of the Council of Higher Education:

Giving a new opportunity to exhausted and interrupted open education students to re-register and join open education programs at their universities.

Approving the settlement of the status of some students at the University of Al-Furat and the Idlib branch of the University of Aleppo.

Granting a semester to students who are exhausted of enrollment opportunities in private universities.
