The ship of the NGO SOS Mediterranée Ocean Viking with 113 migrants on board touched the quay of the port of Ravenna, greeted by the cry "Welcome to Italy" of some activists of Mediterranea Saving Humans.
The first medical operations on board immediately began, then the passengers will be disembarked for all further checks.
Several representatives of the local administration are present including the mayor of Ravenna Michele De Pascale and 300 men and women including doctors and health workers, members of the Red Cross, firefighters and law enforcement agencies.
The youngest of the migrants on board is just 17 days old.
In all, three newborns have been saved, 34 unaccompanied minors out of 113 people.
The youngest, explains the NGO in a post on social media, is the son of an 18-year-old woman, one of whom spent one of them in Libya before fleeing.
"In his short life, he spent a day at sea where he could have died at any moment. It is absurd to know that people have no choice but to risk their lives and those of their children to escape Libya," says Claire, the communications officer on board.
Along approximately 200 meters of quayside, the various heated principals will be set up to welcome them.
Two 118 tents for any serious cases, three normal visit clinics and two separate waiting areas, one for Covid cases and one for non-Covid cases.
In addition to the medical tents, there are areas for social support, Red Cross operators and clowns for the many minors arriving (there are 35 in all).
Panettone, milk, hot drinks, coffee, but also toys and clothes are available.
Finally, an area for recognition and identification is ready.
An initial health check will still be carried out on board the ship by three maritime health doctors.
"A ship of migrants here in Ravenna is new - said the prefect - but as soon as we found out we got on the move and the organizational machine started. What you see here is a miracle of commitment, will and collaboration on the part of everyone".
More than 300 units are involved in the reception, including the health sector, the Red Cross, doctors, nurses and staff of the Municipality of Ravenna.
100 law enforcement officers employed and 100 volunteers who will take turns on various shifts.
During the
night, a banner was hung in the port area of Ravenna, in the terminal area, with the words "closed ports for safe cities" in conjunction with the arrival in the morning at the Romagna port of call of the Ocean Viking ship with 113 migrants on board .
