(ANSA) - BEIRUT, DECEMBER 31 - At least 3,825 people died in violence in Syria in 2022, the lowest toll since the war began in the country in 2011. This was announced by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), underlining that at the end of the last year the victims were 3,746.

Among the 2022 victims are 1,627 civilians, including 321 children, according to data from the UK-based NGO and with an extensive network of sources in Syria.

Of the civilians killed, 209 people, half of them children, died from mines and explosive devices.

It is estimated that the war in the country has caused half a million victims and millions of displaced people.

After years of deadly fighting and bombing following the regime's brutal crackdown on anti-government protests in 2011, the fighting has virtually ceased in the last three years.

There is occasional sporadic fighting, as well as jihadist attacks especially in the eastern part of the country.

Several powers are involved in the war that has divided Syria.

Bashar al-Assad's regime has reconquered most of the territory, but Kurdesiri forces control large parts of the north and northeast.

Although Russian-backed government forces continue to strike Idlib sporadically, the ceasefire agreement is largely respected.
