An application must be completed for newborns and over 18s.

All children up to the age of 18 who are domiciled or have their habitual abode in Germany are entitled to child benefit.
Children up to the age of 25 can also apply for child benefit if they are in vocational training.
In addition, there are children who do federal voluntary service – sometimes also children who are looking for work.
Child benefit is still only available on application.
The application for child benefit can be picked up as a form from the Family Benefits Office of the Employment Agency – parents can now also fill it out online.

Child benefit applications for newborns can be filled out online with the ELSTER control software without additional printing or a manual signature.
A valid ELSTER certificate is required for this.
First of all, general questions about the child and parents must be answered when applying for child benefit for newborns.
This includes questions about German citizenship and place of residence as well as whether you are pursuing an employment related to a foreign country.
Once these questions have been answered, nothing stands in the way of applying for child benefit for newborns.
250 euros per child: child benefit increase in 2023 – also for children over 18 years of age
Consumers who do not have ELSTER access and do not want to create one can of course still fill out the application for child benefit manually, sign it and submit it to the family benefits office.
Both are also possible if an application is made for children over the age of 18.
In addition to general questions about the applicant and the child, you still have to answer why the child benefit is still needed.
Reasons include, for example, if the child is in vocational training, is looking for a job or is doing voluntary service.
