Netflix is now putting a stop to the practice of sharing passwords.

A payment model is to be introduced at the beginning of 2023 and is already being tested.

Munich – Unfortunately, the year 2022 did not shine because of its good news.

And for streaming users, 2023 doesn't start any better.

Because in the course of the year, the streaming provider Netflix plans to crack down.

A ban on sharing an account with people outside of your own household is intended to prevent series and film viewing that is virtually free of charge.

A heavy blow for all streaming bums and password splitters - but one that can be bypassed.

Netflix innovation 2023: password sharing prohibited – customers need to know that

Netflix is an industry giant on the German streaming market.

The company recently landed another big catch with its in-house production, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

Released shortly before Christmas, the crime thriller about detective Daniel Craig aka Benoit Blanc cleared the streaming and television landscape.

Netflix is also making a name for itself with series like Stranger Things, Wednesday or the series about the ex-royals Harry and Meghan.

A carefree under-the-radar period for Netflix users is coming to an end.

But for the new year, the streaming service announces the unpopular change: simply sharing a password will be a thing of the past.

"It's great that our members love Netflix movies and series so much that they want to share them with many others," said a Netflix press release.

"But the widespread account sharing between households today is undermining our long-term ability to invest in and improve our service."

Netflix wants to benefit from all users - payment model for password sharing

Netflix will not ban the practice entirely.

However, the resourceful US company wants a piece of the cake.

The idea: If you want to share the password with people outside your own household, you should pay extra for it, according to a press release.

In South America, Netflix started a field test with the new model in early 2022.

In addition to the basic subscription, an account holder was billed just under $3 if they shared their account.

Test phase since early 2022: New model will also come to Europe

As Netflix also announced in the press release, a profile transfer to another account should be made possible.

This has already happened in Germany.

As a result, after the introduction of the new model, every profile owner will be able to transfer their user data to their own account.

In addition, the streaming service plans to improve account management with the paid "sub-accounts" of the "extra members" and the collected end devices.

The company is still giving its customers a small grace period.

The testing phase in South America will continue "until we better understand what is easiest for our members".

However, they already mention a rough period of time.

“We will start rolling out these features more widely in early 2023.” It remains to be seen when it will be the turn of the European market.

However, one thing is clear: the new model will be even less popular with customers than the new, cheap subscription version with advertising.
