While out for a walk in upstate New York, a woman spots a cat sheltering in a tree from the cold.

She's already showing signs of frostbite.

While walking her dogs in a Buffalo park, Lori Jean spots a cat crouched in a tree.

Nothing unusual for velvet paws in and of itself, but this cat makes a pathetic and sickly impression.

As a certified pet first aid instructor, she has a trained eye.

So she puts her dogs in the car so she can approach the animal in peace.

Lori posts the video of her approach on TikTok.

She says: "We found this kitten hiding in a tree to keep warm.

It covers its face with its tail to protect itself from the cold wind".

Lori tries to gain the cat's trust while remaining extremely patient.

She elaborates, "After luring him down to the lower branches and coaxing him for about 25-30 minutes, he made the jump down."

The cat follows Lori across the park, even if they had to take short breaks from time to time.

Because he's scared of all sorts of things, just not people.

It quickly becomes clear to Lori that this is not a wild cat, but an outdoor cat that actually has a home.

Woman rescues stray cat and searches for owner

Lori takes the cat to a vet.

She can't just take the animal home with her.

Found animals must always be reported to the municipality, the police, an animal shelter or the veterinarian.

Finally, it is important to determine who owns the cat.

She continues: "We took him for a health check and a microchip scan while posting pictures and photos of him on our local lost pet social media pages."

As it turned out, the cat already had frostbite on the tips of its ears, and parts of them were dying.

“We are still looking for his owners.

Until then, he's warm and comfortable with us and not out in the cold."

Unfortunately, no one has come forward so far and Lori continues to appeal to all pet owners not to simply abandon their animals when they have gotten tired of them.

In a follow-up post, Lori reveals that although the cat she named Devito lost a piece of the tips of his ears, he has now found a loving new home.

Her brother officially adopted the cat.
