When it comes to shopping, a lot is changing this year at Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Co. Here is an overview of what consumers should know now.

Kassel – There are some changes for customers in the supermarket this year.

For example, groceries are becoming more expensive again.

After food prices rose sharply last year, there is no relief in sight this year either – quite the opposite.

Many manufacturers continue to increase their prices, which also leads to higher prices from providers such as Rewe, Aldi, Lidl and Edeka.

hna.de reports on this.

Branded products in particular are set to become significantly more expensive this year.

"In Germany alone, as the Rewe Group, we have price increases of more than one billion euros for branded goods on the table for the first quarter," said Rewe boss Lionel Souque in an interview with

Der Spiegel

.

However, the supermarket chain does not always want to participate in the strong increases.

In the past few months, Rewe's own products have been advertised and branded products have been thrown out of the range.

From the middle of the year there will be a new meat label.

Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and other supermarkets: gaps on the shelves and more expensive products

In an interview, the Rewe boss explains that groceries are likely to become around five percent more expensive.

The reason for this is the rise in raw material and energy prices, which only become noticeable in the supermarket with a slight delay.

According to Souque, however, some manufacturers would like to increase their prices disproportionately.

“Customers have a pain threshold when it comes to price, and once this is exceeded, they also abandon brands they love.

Many multinationals will feel that,” says the Rewe boss.

According to Focus

, consumers have to be prepared for higher prices in supermarkets and discounters such as Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Edeka

for these products in particular :

  • drugstore items

  • finished products

  • Dairy products (butter, milk, cheese and yogurt)

  • soft drinks

  • confectionery

Other providers also do not want to accept some price increases.

Just recently, Edeka and Rossmann were in a price dispute with a manufacturer.

Aldi has already dropped negotiations, so some products are no longer available.

In 2023, this can again lead to empty shelves in supermarkets or gaps in the product range.

Big change to the refrigerated counter at Rewe and Edeka: the meat labeling will change in 2023

This year there will also be a change to the meat counter in the supermarket.

This should make it easier for customers of Rewe, Edeka and Co. to see the type of housing in which an animal was kept.

This should be made possible by a new meat labeling, which is divided into five stages.

The new meat labeling should be mandatory for German suppliers from July 2023.

Another new feature is that suppliers from abroad can also provide information about how the animals are kept, reports the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

For foreign providers, however, this information is voluntary.

No more Rewe brochures - changes in 2023

From summer 2023, Rewe will be the first retailer to stop issuing printed brochures, thereby breaking with a long tradition.

The company wants to become more sustainable and save paper.

Customers can still find the brochures digitally, for example in the Rewe app.
