It was one of the major Netflix projects of the last year: the mystery series »1899« was produced entirely in the studio using the latest LED technology and is considered the most expensive German production to date.
Baran bo Odar and Jantje Freise acted as showrunners, who had previously staged three seasons of the hit series »Dark« for the streaming provider.
As reported by the US industry magazine Variety, among others, Odar has now announced the end of the project: "It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that '1899' will not be continued," the statement said.
"We would have liked to have completed the incredible journey with a second and third season, like we did with 'Dark.'
But some things don't turn out the way you planned them.«
The fact that Netflix was forced to end the project just six weeks after the start makes it clear how bad the prestige project's viewing figures must have been.
The streaming provider publishes hardly reliable numbers.

Christmas hit »Glass Onion«: Netflix happy, director angryBy Christian Buß
Netflix is under a lot of pressure right now.
The entertainment group hardly releases any global mega hits in the series sector, while Amazon Prime recently put a record budget into the series continuation of the "Lord of the Rings" saga.
Disney+, in turn, can flood the market with Marvel epics and "Avatar" sequels into the next decade.
And the Paramount+ service, which has just been launched in Germany, has the trademark rights to »Star Trek«, which also guarantees it streaming blockbusters.
Netflix now appears to be focusing more on feature-length productions.
Apparently, the streaming platform was able to land a hit with the public with the mystery thriller »Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery«.
The film was number one in its own charts for a long time - right before its predecessor »Knives Out«.
