The fireworks manufacturer Weco is being criticized for misogynistic sayings: the "jokes" were spread in crackers for children.
Eitorf - The fireworks manufacturer Weco is currently under heavy criticism: Possibly outdated crackers fly around the company's ears because of misogynist slogans.
Musician Jan Delay had complained about the settled claims on Twitter.
The company promptly responded with an apology.
Weco under criticism: misogynist jokes in crackers for New Year's Eve
A tweet by musician Jan Delay caused a stir in which he was outraged by a product from fireworks manufacturer Weco.
Some of the children's New Year's crackers contained very tasteless jokes about women.
Delay vented his anger on Twitter: "Was speechless when the host's little daughter read these 'jokes' from our crackers last night.
What kind of misogynist shit is that?
for children from 3??
happy 1953,” he wrote.
Delay also posted a photo showing two sayings from the manufacturer.
Among other things, the notes dealt with violence against women.
The tweet also prompted more customers to tweet about the racist or misogynistic slurs Weco was making and express criticism.
The crackers were sold at Aldi, among others.
Weco reacts to criticism: "We expressly apologize"
The company responded promptly with a press release.
It says: "We regret that these popping candy sayings have circulated and at this point we can only agree that the content presented is neither funny, tasteful nor up-to-date.
We hereby expressly apologize to all persons who feel offended or attacked by the texts.
We reject discrimination in any form!”
One had been confronted with "the same problem" five years ago.
At that time, "all textual content was subjected to an extensive revision".
Crackers with such content were no longer included in the production batches manufactured after that.
Criticism of New Year's pops: Weco suspects old product batches are behind them
The company was "also very surprised" by these formulations.
As a possible explanation, the manufacturer stated that the products came from older production batches and had only recently been sold to end users.
This is common, as fireworks do not have a sell-by date and production batches are never sold completely in just one year, but gradually over a longer period of time.
In the past two years there was a "Böller ban" because of the corona pandemic.

Sorting out was not possible, however, "since this "old" product, like many other fireworks, was distributed via a large network of intermediaries," the statement said.
