(ANSA) - CATANIA, 03 JAN - A fishing boat carrying about 700 migrants was intercepted and rescued by patrol boats of the Coast Guard and the Guardia di Finanza about 26 miles south-east of the coast of Syracuse.
The castaways were transhipped onto Italian naval vessels and transferred to the ports of Syracuse, Catania and Roccella Ionica (Reggio Calabria).
The ship Dattilo of the Coast Guard also took part in the rescue operations which, with about 200 people on board, set sail for the port of the Etna capital.
