More than six years after the death of a four-month-old baby on Sylt, the 52-year-old father has to answer for manslaughter in court.
The trial against the man who, according to the indictment, is said to have shaken his son began in Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, on Tuesday.
According to a court spokesman, the mother of the deceased boy was heard as a witness at the start.
According to the indictment, the crime happened in early September 2016 on the North Sea island.
According to earlier reports, the baby was first picked up by the ambulance service from his parents and taken to a hospital, where he later died.
First saw no reasons for detention
Later investigations revealed the suspicion of violence, the boy's father came under strong suspicion.
According to the court, the man was initially at large and was staying in his home country of Poland because no grounds for detention were seen.
This only changed in the summer of last year, because summonses from the court no longer reached the accused at his address in the neighboring country.
The court assumed that there was a risk of absconding and had him taken into custody.
He was then transferred from Poland to Germany.
