In fact, while the ambulance entered the field for first aid, many of them wept in despair, others prayed on their knees.
"His heart rate was restored on the field. He is currently sedated and in critical condition," the Buffalo Bills twitter profile underlined.
Hamlin, 24, received a severe blow to the chest in a fight against an opponent in the first quarter, he stood up and then collapsed to the ground.
Medical personnel took to the field and first aid lasted more than half an hour before the ambulance transported him to the University of Cincinnati hospital, a few kilometers away from the stadium.
At first the resumption of play was announced after a few minutes, but in the face of the protest of the fans and the requests of the captains, the referees temporarily suspended the match, before the NFL commissioner declared the match definitively postponed.
