People born between 1959 and 1964 must exchange their driver's license by January 19, 2023.
What you need to know.
Cologne – For people who were born between 1959 and 1964, a trip to the driving license office is still necessary this January.
The reason: All paper driving licenses issued up to December 1998 and all credit card driving licenses issued between 1999 and 2013 must be exchanged over the next few years.
In the future, driving licenses should be forgery-proof and uniform throughout the EU.
In addition, all driver's licenses should be in one database
recorded to prevent misuse.
For some age groups in Germany, it means until January 19, 2023: off to the driving license office.

The renewal works in sections according to age group, and: "Currently, the particularly high-birth rate age groups 1959 to 1964 are on it," says the ADAC.
“They have until January 19, 2023 to exchange their driver's licenses.
The entire exchange process must be completed by January 19, 2033,” says the ADAC.
So there is not much time to exchange - which is why we are answering the most important questions about driving license exchange here.
Exchange driver's license until January 19, 2023 - how does that work?
You go to your driver's license office and apply for an exchange of the driver's license for motorcycle and car classes.
An examination or even a health check is not necessary.
Driver's License Exchange: What Happens If You Don't Exchange?
"The exchange is mandatory," explains the ADAC.
Anyone who continues to drive with their old car or motorcycle license and allows the deadline to expire risks a fine of 10 euros.
If you don't meet the deadline for exchanging your driver's license, you have to pay.
Who has to exchange the driving license and when?
Year of birth of the driver's license holder | Day by which the driving license must be exchanged |
before 1953 | January 19, 2033 |
1953 to 1958 | Deadline expired on July 19, 2022 |
1959 to 1964 | January 19, 2023 |
1965 to 1970 | January 19, 2024 |
since 1971 | January 19, 2025 |
This table applies to driving licenses issued up to and including December 31, 1998.
On the homepage of the German Automobile Club, you can find out when it's your turn to exchange by stating the date of issue and the type of driver's license.
As already mentioned, it is currently those born between 1959 and 1964 who have to hurry up with the exchange.

Driving license exchange: how much does it cost?
What do I need to bring to the driver's license office?
The cost of the exchange is around 25 euros.
You must bring the following documents with you to the driving license office:
ID card or passport
biometric passport photo
current driver's license
Important: "After the exchange, you are no worse off than before: With the conversion of your old-law driving license classes, the classes that correspond to the previous driving license are confirmed in the new driving license," explains the ADAC.
Means: Only the driver's license document has to be "renewed", not the driver's license.
Driver's license successfully exchanged - how long it is then valid
The ADAC reports: "Regardless of when you took your driving test, you can continue to drive cars and/or motorcycles indefinitely." Only the validity of the driver's license document is limited to 15 years.
Then you would get a new credit card driver’s license – still without an exam and health check.
