Since January 1st, there has been a multiple-use obligation in Germany.

McDonald's has come up with its own system for its restaurants.

Kassel – The year 2023 starts with some new regulations that come into force.

One of the innovations this year is the introduction of the multiple-use obligation.

Since January 1st, restaurateurs have been obliged to provide their customers with a reusable container for taking away food and drinks.

How the offer should look like is up to the providers themselves.

The American fast food restaurant chain McDonald's has considered its own option as a reusable offer for customers.

On its website, McDonald's informs that it will introduce a uniform deposit system in all branches in Germany in the future.

When buying drinks, customers can request a reusable cup for a deposit worth two euros.

The mug can be returned to any German McDonald's restaurant and McDrive.

The reusable packaging obligation applies to plastic packaging, since McDonald's packs its food in paper, no reusable alternative has to be offered here.

The reusable system was already tried out in some McDonald's branches in 2022 and then expanded to all German branches in December 2022.

The fast-food chain thus has its own uniform deposit system.

In addition to drinks, ice cream can also be bought in reusable packaging.

Even before the introduction of their own reusable cups, since 2016 guests could have their drinks filled into cups or cups they had brought with them at McDonalds.

Change not only at McDonald's: the returnable packaging obligation applies everywhere

The new law will also change things in other restaurants and cafes.

As of this year, all restaurants and cafés are obliged to offer their customers reusable packaging for their food and drinks to take away.

The aim is to reduce packaging waste and thereby conserve resources.

The reusable alternative must not entail additional costs for customers, but a deposit, as with McDonalds, is permitted.

All large companies in Germany that sell food and drinks to customers must comply with the reusable packaging obligation.

Some supermarkets, such as Edeka, also want to reduce packaging waste with a deposit system.

The only exceptions to the returnable packaging obligation are companies whose area is less than 80 square meters or who employ fewer than five people.
