The European Union authorizes the placing on the market of Acheta domesticus, i.e. the domestic cricket, in partially defatted powder as a novel food.
This is what the Commission Implementing Regulation EU 2023/5 of 3 January 2023 published in the Community Official Journal provides.
On 8 July 2020, the Commission had asked the European Food Safety Authority to carry out an assessment on the matter and on 23 March 2022, EFSA adopted a scientific opinion on the safety of partially defatted powder of Acheta domesticus intero as a new food.
For a period of five years, starting from the date of entry into force of this regulation, 24 January 2023, as specified in the Regulation published in the Official Journal of the EU, only the company Cricket One Co. Ltd is authorized to place Cricket One Co. Ltd on the market Union of the novel food based on partially defatted house cricket powder, unless a subsequent applicant obtains an authorization for that novel food.
