Following severe side effects: the Ministry of Health took hair straightening products off the shelves Israel today

2023-01-04T17:24:12.282Z

The decision was made after reports of more than 20 unusual cases that occurred near the use of the products.

The Ministry of Health announced today (Wednesday) the cancellation of licenses for hair straightening lotions containing glyoxylic acid after a causal link was found between their use and serious side effects, including severe kidney failure.

The decision was made after the Director General of the Ministry of Health instructed an advisory committee to examine more than 20 cases reported to the Ministry of Health in the last two years of severe side effects that occurred near the use of lotions containing glyoxylic acid.

The Ministry of Health announced that as of January 1, 2023, licenses for hair straightening lotions containing glyoxylic acid will be revoked and licenses for this type of lotion will not be granted.

In the last two years, over 20 cases of serious side effects, including kidney failure that required dialysis, were reported to the Ministry of Health, which occurred near the use of hair straightening creams that contained glyoxylic acid.

The decision was made in light of finding a causal link between the use of perfumes and serious side effects reported to the Ministry of Health, which included kidney failure.

The licenses were revoked

About six months ago, the Director General of the Ministry of Health, Prof. Nachman Ash, directed the establishment of an advisory committee, and this committee examined the causal relationship between the use of hair straightening perfumes and the serious side effects that were reported.

The committee found that there is a temporal connection between the performance of the straightening and the kidney damage in the reported cases , the absence of another factor in a comprehensive clarification and the presence of the active substance in hair straightening materials support the causal link between the performance of hair straightening and kidney damage. In light of the committee's recommendations, and after the Ministry of Health gave the relevant license holders an opportunity to voice their claims, the Ministry of Health revoked the licenses of the aforementioned massagers in order to protect public health.

The Ministry of Health warns the public that the use of products that have not been licensed by the Ministry of Health or the use of products that do not comply with the terms of their license may harm public health.

It should be carefully checked that the perfumes used are only approved perfumes that do not contain additional substances whose composition has not been tested and whose safety is unknown.

You can check the existence of licenses for perfumes and the approved purpose of use on the website of the Ministry of Health in the perfume database, see link to the perfume database.

May cause radiation

Problematic components in makeup products, such as talc and lead, can cause serious health problems - but there are other components in the care sector that are also dangerous or suspected as such.

A large part of them are listed with their chemical names, so it is doubtful that the average consumer can understand what it is, even if he is alert and checks what is in the product.

"Sometimes it's hard for me to identify the material too," says Dr. Verd Koipman, an expert in the safety of consumer products, hazardous materials and radiation, "so it's understandable that when someone who doesn't understand the field starts reading, he'll get lost.

It usually starts with water and glycerin, and the further the name of the ingredient is from the beginning - the smaller its amount in the product.

You have to check what the first five components are, and make sure there is no deception in what the product offers."

Quite a few women buy make-up and cosmetic products on websites abroad, when their source is not always known, so you should know where to order from.

"I recommend ordering skin care and makeup products only from sites that have a father and a mother," notes Reut Lunberg, owner of the group "Reut Buy Me", "that is, not from Express and Shine, where it is not always known which brands are involved, under what conditions and control the products were produced, what Their certification and if they passed sensitivity tests."
