The public prosecutor's office in Zwickau has brought charges against the Mayor of Glauchau, Marcus Steinhart (CDU).
The press spokeswoman told SPIEGEL that he was accused of both bodily harm in combination with insult and threat.
Since the injured party is a child, the case is now with the youth judge of the Hohenstein-Ernstthal District Court.
The "Bild" newspaper, among others, had previously reported on the indictment.
The background to the whole thing is an incident on August 30th in a school in Waldenburg in Saxony.
There, the local politician is said to have confronted and attacked one of his son's classmates.
Steinhart explained on Facebook at the beginning of September how the incident should have happened: Two classmates had harassed his son for months with "hardly imaginable insults and humiliation".
This put a huge mental strain on the boy.
According to my son's "very clearly expressed fears", as a father he "literally 'blew his fuses'".
When he confronted the main actor and confronted him with his behavior, the physical altercation ensued.
He acted as a horrified father wanting to protect his son and regrets the incident, Steinhart wrote.
Steinhart has been the head of Glauchau's town hall since the beginning of August.
The father of three, who grew up in Glauchau and has been a member of the CDU parliamentary group in the city council since 2008, is also threatened with legal consequences.
District Administrator Carsten Michaelis (CDU) decided to initiate disciplinary proceedings because of the incident, the Zwickau District Office announced in October.
The authority can impose sanctions up to a fine, it said.
In the case of more serious offenses, the procedure is conducted by the state directorate.
