The year 2023 has just begun, and the rankings in the aviation world are already starting.
This time the rating of the 20 safest airlines in the world for the coming year, compiled by the Australian aviation website AirlineRatings.com which published its regular annual list.
There is no doubt that in recent years, airlines have had a rather difficult time - from the steep drop in flights caused by the Corona epidemic to the countless delays and cancellations of flights later.
However, alongside all this there is also good news: "I would say that the aviation industry is incredibly safe," says Jeffrey Thomas, editor-in-chief of the website AirlineRatings.com, which tracks the performance and safety measures of 385 airlines in the world.

"There were no air accidents during the epidemic period"
"The corona epidemic has placed a huge burden on airlines around the world, with long delays and flight cancellations that have put even the most loyal and forgiving passengers to the test," says Thomas.
"From a safety perspective, the airlines have done an outstanding job of maintaining the operational fitness of their pilots and aircrews, while their maintenance engineers are the unsung heroes who have kept the planes [in serviceable condition]. There have been no air accidents during the pandemic period."
The Forbes website reports that the 2023 annual list took into account several parameters that were weighed together.
For example, the age of the aircraft, serious incidents that occurred, the number of fatalities (if there were accidents), analysis of audits by regulatory bodies in the industry, government audits, leading safety initiatives and more.
"Our 20 safest airlines all stand out for being at the forefront of safety, innovation and new aircraft launches," says Thomas.
According to him, the differences in safety levels between these leading companies are very small.
"We only looked at serious incidents. All airlines have daily incidents and many of them are related to problems in the production of the planes and not to operational problems related to the airlines. However, the way the flight crew handles these incidents is what determines that one airline will be safer than another."

The Australians (again) are in first place
At the top of the table is the Australian airline Qantas, which was crowned the safest for 2023. It replaces last year's winner, Air New Zealand.
This is not the first time Qantas has come out on top.
The company, founded more than 100 years ago, won this title consecutively in 2014-2017.
Later, in the years 2019-2021, she led again.
It should be noted again that the rating was done by an Australian website.
"There are no big surprises this year: the major airlines continue to direct resources to the training of their pilots and planes," concludes Thomas.
"The burden was much greater than usual, due to the return of the planes from storage and additional training to return the pilots to work after the corona epidemic."
In this context it is worth noting that also
El Al
Received the maximum safety rating (7 out of 7 stars), but a relatively low score in regards to the product level (4 out of 7) and dealing with the corona epidemic (4 out of 7) - that is, the cleanliness of the planes, disinfection kit for passengers, etc.
Israir also received a maximum safety score, while Arkia stands with 6 safety stars out of 7.
