The consumption of fruit and vegetables is considered important, especially in winter.

However, consumers should avoid certain foods.

Kassel – Winter is considered the time of year when we should take a particularly large number of vitamins.

Many consumers therefore prefer to buy fruit and vegetables, nuts or tea from Aldi, Rewe and Co.

In addition to seasonal products, we can find all kinds of fruit and vegetables on supermarket shelves all year round.

However, it is advisable to avoid certain foods during the cold season and to consciously buy seasonal fruit and vegetables.

The purchase and consumption of seasonal and regional food from Edeka, Lidl and Co. is not only good for your health, we can also support the environment and fair working conditions.

Groceries at Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Co.: Avoid certain fruit and vegetables in winter

Groceries such as strawberries, apples, courgettes and tomatoes, which can also be found on the shelves of Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Co. in winter, have often been transported a long way or have matured with a great deal of energy.

According to Greenpeace, strawberries are also heavily contaminated with pesticides.

Consumers should therefore only buy the sweet fruits when they are ripe in Germany, recommends Manfred Krautter, Greenpeace's chemical expert.

Residues of pesticides and preservatives are also regularly discovered in oranges, tangerines and lemons, although they can be found on the shelves at Aldi, Edeka, Lidl and Co. marked as “untreated”.

Because the label only means that they were not treated with skin treatment agents after harvesting, the consumer advice center informs.

In winter, green salads such as lettuce or iceberg lettuce are usually unripe when they reach the supermarket shelves from the heated greenhouse.

They therefore have less taste and also contain fewer healthy nutrients.

According to the consumer center, products from the greenhouse damage the environment up to 30 times more with harmful carbon dioxide than outdoor vegetables.

With the help of a seasonal calendar, consumers can get an overview of which fruit and vegetables are currently being grown regionally or sold from stock.

Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Co.: Be careful when buying nuts and tea in winter

Consumers should also pay attention to the origin of nuts in the cold season.

Peanuts, cashew nuts and almonds usually come from all over the world and have long transport routes.

Alternatives are walnuts and hazelnuts, which ripen in Germany in autumn and winter.

When it comes to tea, it is advisable to choose fair-trade products.

Conventional black and green teas mostly come from China, India, Sri Lanka and Kenya, where the products are manufactured under appalling working conditions, according to a Deutschlandfunk
