More than half of Germans are overweight.

But not all fat is the same: if a lifebelt has attached itself, especially to the abdomen, it becomes dangerous.

Ulrich Bauhofer routinely measures the abdominal circumference of his patients.

If it's over 94 cm for men and over 80 cm for women, it makes you realize in no uncertain terms that you're going in the wrong direction.

Because from 102 cm in men and from 88 cm in women it becomes critical.

In this interview, he answers why and gives tips on what you can do about it immediately.

Why does it become critical if your patients have too large an abdominal circumference?

The much ridiculed beer belly, the brewery ulcer, as they say in Bavaria, is a clear sign of too much belly fat.

All the jokes about the stomach – eg if I don't have a stomach, I can't make decisions on the basis of my gut – play down a fact that, scientifically speaking, can no longer be played down at all.

The equation is very simple: if the circumference is more than the centimeters mentioned, the risk of cardiovascular disease or diabetes increases significantly.

It used to be thought that if the BMI is in the green range, i.e. our body mass index, then you are on the safe side.

Today we know that the BMI is only ONE important factor.

The waist circumference is much more meaningful.

This value belongs to the deadly quartet: 1. belly fat - 2. high blood pressure - 3. elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels and 4. elevated blood sugar levels.

You also have to realize that the vital functions of our organism are closely linked and influence each other.

Let's get down to the fat: do you mean the bacon rolls that are easy to grab?

no

The fat rolls that we can easily grasp are our subcutaneous fatty tissue, our visible fat.

Abdominal fat, visceral fat or intra-abdominal fat, is stored deep in the abdominal cavity and thus increases in size.

You need to place the tape measure under the rib cage and measure once all the way around.

Even optically thin people can have too much belly fat.

Visceral fat serves two purposes: it protects our organs and is another storehouse of energy reserves when there is a lack of food.

What's So Dangerous About Visceral Fat?

Think of the fat deep in the abdominal cavity almost as a separate organ that can produce substances such as hormones, messenger substances and inflammatory factors itself.

This is how low-threshold inflammations arise because our metabolic and immunological processes interact in a very complex way.

If the abdominal fat produces too many of these substances, the immune system is chronically activated by these inflammatory factors.

Ie it is permanently stressed.

Low-threshold inflammation can be compared to the embers of a campfire.

A smoldering fire.

This also explains why overweight patients with Covid disease are less able to cope with the virus, suffer severe courses much more often and have a high risk of long Covid.

Your immune system is overloaded by the silent inflammation.

Visceral fat is also known to be a factor in the release of fatty acids into the bloodstream, which can lead to heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

So what can you do about belly fat?

The most important thing is, of course, to lose weight.

Maybe knowing these scientific facts gives you a new motivation.

Nevertheless, I know of course that it is not that easy.

Believe me, I've been looking after people who want to lose weight for 40 years and I probably know most of the diets.

In my opinion, there is only one really long-term and simple solution: you have to love and enjoy healthy, fresh, crunchy, vitamin-rich food.

And stimulate your metabolism.

If you e.g.

For example, if you can eat sweet oranges with honey, nuts and plain yoghurt, why would you choose a candy bar loaded with preservatives, flavor enhancers, trans fats, artificial sweeteners and colors?

Most of the time, starting with a basic detoxification of the body helps.

Intermittent fasting is also a good approach. Researchers led by Frank Madeo from the Institute for Molecular Biosciences in Graz have shown, for example, that abdominal fat is reduced by fasting intervals.

Still, isn't it that easy to lose weight and keep it off permanently?

Losing weight can be so easy, but unfortunately the wrong approaches are often recommended.

That's why I always ask my patients what exactly is preventing them from losing weight: Is it body hunger or soul hunger?

Both drive us to the fridge.

We have to keep that apart.

But the most important thing is not to go on a radical diet, because then we will bring powerful opponents onto the scene, against whom you have no chance with willpower.

I mean the hunger and satiety hormones that have been thrown out of balance, the weight memory in our intestines and of course the metabolic trap.

As soon as you starve, your body goes into low-power mode because it doesn't care if you want to fit in a pair of pants, it just wants to survive.

You have to eat, but the right thing.

And boost your metabolism.

What tip can you give our readers?

You need to eat healthy and "right".

Radical diets are not long-term solutions and, at worst, will harm you.

Include mental aspects: ravenous hunger attacks between meals, for example, can be stress-related and should be avoided.

I explain how this can be done, for example, in my videos on my YouTube channel.

Dr.

Bauhofer, thank you for the interview.
