The online market for grocers has grown significantly in recent years, and now a new supermarket is coming to Germany with big promises.

Kassel – A trend has been developing on the German market for years: more and more people are buying their groceries online and having them delivered.

Many supermarkets, such as Rewe and even the delivery service Lieferando, have already followed the trend.

The discounter Aldi is now also planning a delivery service.

Other online markets such as Gorillas and Flink have also established themselves in recent years.

Now another competitor joins in, because the Norwegian food delivery service Oda is coming to Germany.

“In Norway, over the past nine years, we have become the market leader in the online groceries category with a sophisticated logistics system.

We believe that precisely this operational excellence will also make us successful in the German market," said Oda's spokesman Timea Rüb

Now the question arises: Can the Norwegian supermarket also establish itself in Germany?

New supermarket from Norway wants to conquer Germany: competition for Aldi and Co.?

Oda apparently has ambitious goals and high demands on itself. On Oda's own website, the supermarket writes about its concept:

  • Large selection:

including organic products and private labels

  • Low prices:

Advertises with discount campaigns and even wants to be able to keep up with discounter prices, such as those from Aldi

  • Flexible Delivery:

    Between 6am and 10pm

  • Fresh guarantee:

otherwise the purchase price will be refunded

The order should work online and via app.

The online supermarket expanded to Finland last year.

In Germany, the first location will open in Berlin in January 2023 and will be used for a test phase.

"At the same time, the population potential in Germany is large: With our centralized logistics model, we are in an excellent position to supply large parts of the country - even better than in the sparsely populated Norwegian home market," said Rüb.

Online competition for supermarkets and discounters like Aldi: ordering is becoming more and more popular

The fact that the online market for groceries is growing rapidly has already been established several times, for example in the study "Grocery Insights 2022" by Accenture in cooperation with the market research institute Growth from Knowledge (GfK).

It predicts that food delivery services will have a market share of around 17 percent by 2030.

Many companies are therefore expanding their delivery services, and even the online giant Amazon has already tried out cooperations with supermarkets.

Oda apparently sees this as an opportunity, investors are supporting the expansion of the Norwegian online supermarket with the equivalent of 145 million euros, as the company reports in a press release.

The next few months will show whether Oda can ultimately assert itself against the existing online retailers.
