Many health insurance companies will increase their contributions in 2023.

Pensioners are also affected.

But what does the increase mean for you?

Hamburg – The basic contribution to health insurance is set by law: it is 14.6 percent of the income that is subject to contributions.

In 2023, however, the additional contributions will increase.

These can be set by the health insurance companies themselves.

What does this increase mean for retirees?

Additional health insurance contributions will be increased – what that means for pensioners

The general contribution rate for health insurance for pensioners is 14.6 percent across Germany.

Pensioners bear only half of it, i.e. 7.3 percent - the other half is covered by the German pension insurance.

Pensioners don't have to worry about anything, the share is simply withheld from the monthly pension payment.

The pension insurance also contributes half of the additional contribution levied by health insurance companies – how high is this?

The additional contribution is determined individually by each health insurance company.

In 2023, many health insurance companies will increase this additional contribution - this is often 0.1 to 0.5 percent higher than in 2022. If the additional contribution from your health insurance company is 1.6 percent, you have to pay 0.8 percent of it yourself.

Pensioners also have to pay the contribution to long-term care insurance.

This will be 3.05 percent in 2023, or 3.40 percent for childless people.

This long-term care insurance contribution must be borne by pensioners alone.
